Sinking of the pool fisher.

Thank you very much for the extra info. I will certainly try your suggestions and see if i can get anymore info.

Captain John Stewart was my father. I was very young when he died and don't know much about his time in the Mechant Navy or the circumstances of his death so the info that you have provided has been much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply, there really is nothing much that I can add to what I have already written. If you want the address of the two lads who survived I have them and just maybe they could add some more information on how your father died. They were there but down below when the ship was going over so maybe they had no contact with him at the time of the incident. They would have known him of course and the problem with the cleats on the forard hatch could be explained better.
I do hope you can find the answers you need and the previous pages were a help in understanding what happened.

I actually heard a story about a survivor of the Pool Fisher. Now this may be apocryphal, so take it with as many grains of salt as you wish, but it seems there was a first trip deck or galley boy aboard when she went down. He was saved and after having some leave, reported to the pool and stressed that he definitely didn't want a coaster again. He was sent out to the Derbyshire........

if you read my story of the Sinking, the Inquest and Court of Inquiry, all the facts are there.
I know, I was there and am still in contact after 32 years , with the two surving lads.

Brian, it really pays to read and follow all the treads on your site. The sinking of the Pool Fisher brought back memories of my sailing on her in 1959 as 2nd Engr when she was quite new. We took all the mixing plant to Ponta Del Garda in the Azores for Trinidad lake Asphalt for the runway laying at the U.S Strategic Air base. What a tragedy for the crew and their families and an ignoble end to a fine small ship.

Today is the 32nd Anniversary of the sinking of the POOL FISHER, 13 dead.
12 Seafarers died and the Chief Engineers wife.
O530 on 6th November 1979.

Brian, A sad incident. Sailed with Eric as 2nd engineer in the Pool Fisher September to December 1960. Enjoyed his company for the short period I sailed with him. Joe.

Thanks for the comment Joe, a very sad and tragic event,
Eric was one of those who were never found, I met his , at the time, 17 year old son. What a great tragedy for him to lose both parents.
My thoughts are with them on this day.
