Further to the sinking of the NZ ship Manuwaui,It appears that she was Captained by a woman, and since then reports have come out of women sailors in the NZ Navy having been subjected to a lot of abuse from men, I don't know if that is the men on board with them or not, but it may throw new light on why or how the ship hit the reef and sunk.

20% of the NZ Navy are women, with at least four in the top jobs, the abuse has come from shoresiders, we used to call them land lubbers, apparently that is now not PC. The Minister of Defense in NZ is also a woman. Have flown with women pilots, have never disembarked because the pilot was female.

The skipper was highly experienced. The board of enquiry will get to the bottom of the sinking now that the black box and bridge log have been recovered. Just one point I would make, if you look at the photo of the vessel when it is listing after hitting the reef you will note the 'not under command' signal just visible above and slightly to the left of the bridge centre. Visibility not the best but the signal is still there. Suggests a mechanical problem. Additionally we have had a number of maritime issues caused by engine breakdowns here in NZ. It would appear from the reports coming in that the culprit may well be the fuel quality now being used. Not an expert but greening of the fuel supply may not be good for marine engines for some reason. If this is so then the naval vessel may be another casualty.

Whoever was the skipper ,man or female , and whatever experience he or she is supposed to have, let’s hope this was a new experience to add to her or his Curriculem Vitae. Experience is only good for the same incident being exactly the same as a former experience., and how often does one see that at sea ? Luck and having competent people on board greatly assists the capable hands of the Gods when in their hands. The fate of those involved will depend on the Board of Enquiry and they certainly aren’t Gods, some more intelligent than others, JS

And me Alan. One thing that occurs to me is that the number of people aboard were in the mid 70s ( not age). The fulltime crew were 36ish. Some boffins as well maybe. Possibly some local bigwigs. Not sure that we will get the complete story but I live in hope. By the way. I note our Pacific Islands cousins are reverting to form demanding lots of money for losing business and food. Pork and taro anyone.
