Could be he had an itchy nose and the other guy told him he could fix that.
Yes John must have been itchy. Imagine is very hard to scratch with boxing gloves on. JS
Many years long past young men were encouraged to wear boxing gloves in bed.
Kept them on the straight and narrow I was told.
Thought that was to stop them picking their nose in bed. Or biting their nails. JS
John.
It was to stop them beating a drum

Latest news regarding the bridge.
The ship is owned by a Singapore company, they are quoting an 1851 maritime law in defense.
It means that the most they will have to pay is some $40 million.
Not bad when you consider the cost of replacement is said to be in the region of up to $2 billion.
A bit more than the claims of the old Exmoor I was on in the early 60’s when in collission with the Dutch passenger ship the Rhuys in the River Plate. The big Insurance company’s like Lloyds don’t think they were called on as no loss of life. The owners of the Exmoor put their claims in with the NE Coast shipowners Association and the costs were put down as a 3 to 2 claim for damages. Dont know who paid the larger amount , know I got nothing for the trauma it caused me dropping the anchor seconds before touching so if any justice in this world the Exmoor should have paid the smaller amount. The master of the Rhuys was his last trip before retiring he told me so wasn’t too pleased . The enquiry held in B.A. I was never called on and being in my early 20s at the time my imagination ran riot and thought I was being kept as the fall guy. JS
#77 what’s the 1851 maritime law John ? JS
#78.I still have my account of this accident in a hard backed book and consists of 7 pages of statements as was that sure would be called for. Far too much info.to type out but just a few paragraphs if not already done so earlier. “ I have held a Chief officers cert. since March 1960. I have been 2/0 on the Exmoor since Feb. 1962. I have about 9 years seagoing experience.”
About 4 pages on .
“ I was aware that the collision occurred between Kil 4 and Kil 5 buoys but I particularly don’t know where we were in relation to either of these buoys when the collision occurred I was too preoccupied on the forecastle dropping the anchor before the collision occurred” . Much much more to this statement and shows how much I was concerned about the aftermath, and was another low time in my life at sea , but the worry was over nothing . I told the company’s solicitors on arrival 2 months later in the uk what I thought was the fault , and they said that’s what we thought but no one else would say it.
Was just another loss of sleep job for a few years after. Would have been much worse with any loss of life. JS
Michael if you ever worked in Smiths drydock in North Shields my interview with the company’s solicitors was at 2200 hrs. after landing on the blocks. By the time I got off the ship both gates to the yard were locked and I had to climb over the wall . Jumping down on the outside was much steeper than expected and twisted both ankles , and had to crawl to outside the Jungle where fortuanetley there was a late taxi to get me home. Cheers JS
