Visited Ports.

Like you I kept a record, in the back of Nories Nautical Tables, which were required by all navigating Cadets, is a list of world ports. As I visited a port I underlined it in the back of my Nories Tables. Here I am almost 65 years after starting that list it still sits on my book shelf and though I don't have any photos of the places, I can conjure up memories of most of them.

i have never served at sea in any capacity - though i consider myself a seaman by virtue of being a ship lover for nigh on 59 years - i have been on 4 cruises - 2 ships had sunk on me after i had cruised on them ! traveled extensively to distant shores - my only regret was not having a camera with me when i spent a few months in the usa - the highlight was my stay on the qm - and missing out on seeing the big u - not that she ever was any favorite of mine - but great ports i have visited was new york - san fransisco - london - rotterdam - hook of holland - harwich - dan lar(?) and of coures back home durban - east london - port elizabeth and cape town - my one still to do would be vancouver

A lot on this site will have been to Vancouver Bryan and all the little ports round Vancouver Island. An awful lot of timber came out of that neck of the woods. Was mainly in the late 50s and early 60s I was in that part of the world but I can remember someone telling me at that period of time that Vancouver was the suicide capital of the world , why I have no idea as was a beautiful part of the world to be in .JS

It may not have been suicides, as Den used to send me pictures of the lovely big salmon he caught, maybe they used to jump in the sea to try and get them

Yes, loved visiting Lionsgate Park. We berthed at I think 'Ballantynes 'pier, and from stern looking across harbour looked strait at ski slope in N Vancouver. Could see skiiers in winter.

i mention vancouver purely on the basis on the feedback from a sister who stays there and has been there for 24 years - she loves the place - but to my regret i have been there nor seen my sister in all the years that have passed

Vancouver sticks in my mind for various reasons ,one of them was 64 years ago, how do I know, because I had just turned 21a few months previously and a crowd of us went into a pub. The Barman said I’m serving you ,you, you, and you, and pointing a finger at me said I’m not serving you, your too young , I felt knee high to a grasshopper and said I’m over 21, prove it he said , rather than punch him on the nose I went rushing back to the ship for my my ID card .rushing back then prepared to punch him on the nose if any arguments , went back in the pub sat down , ordered a beer and he served it not even asking anything just like I was a normal customer which I was, just looked at me as seeing for the first time. It must have been his wrongtime of the month or something . JS
My actual 21 st. Had been a few months earlier in Ma Carrols in Belfast a totally different story , but think it was a good night. JS..

I was fortunate enough to join a ship in Vancouver in the mid 70s.The ship was loaded with a full cargo of sugar from Oz. Having had a few nights in a hotel which was smack in the middle of Gas town I was looking forward to joining the ship for a rest. We eventually joined her at anchor in English bay expecting to go along-side shortly. Unfortuneately (Or fortuneately ) British Columbia Sugar refinery workers decided to go on strke. We were stuck there for about 8 weeks and a jolly good time was had by all in a great place with great people. I met a great girl and was thinking of moving out there after returning to the U.K. but after looking at some job ads in the Canadian High Commission in London,which appeared to have vacancies for lumber jacks or brain surgeons with nothing in between I gave up on the idea and returned to sea.

There are thousands of ports across the globe that many of us have never seen.
But I have found out by cruising, now some 26 done, I can get to some very interesting places that most of the ships we sailed on never went to.

Covered many south sea islands all of which are different, as well as some such as those in Iceland, Norway and other countries.
Travel they say widens the mind, but it does tend to shrink the wallet.
