Hi John.
As with British shipping it was a sad time when the Union Co and BHP got rid of their fleet of ships, we are now at the mercy of mainly foreign owned ships and Govts, and we call ourselves independent. :th_thth5952deef:

For any island country not having its own merchant fleets is the most stupid position for any government with half a brain to let happen. This was that obvious during the Falklands war and even worse today. Sometimes I wonder how some of these politicians are not that disaffected with their own intelligence they don’t just shrivel up with embarrassment . JS
I was in Houlders and the Grange vessels all had a first name which when the initial letters put together spelled Houlder i.e. Hardwicke, Oswestry, Upwey, Dunster, Effingham and Royston. They managed Alexander Shipping ships all named after towns in the west country ending in bury, Tewkesbury, Tenbury etc. The Hadley ships they managed were named after Shakesperian characters beginning with a C Cerinthus, Clymene etc. Much better than LNG1,
Reminds me of a similar experience at my employers(American) in the 70s. Big push for improvement all round covered by the slogan C*****s Approach to Continuous Improvement. As was the way at the time reduced to an acronym - CACI. Our American colleagues were initially puzzled by the hilarity this raised when announcec
Ropners as a company I never found them wanting (Northerners will understand) from my very first visit to Darlington I was treated fairly, as a company we always got what we ordered as far as stores and victualling were concerned. However it was Masters, Mates and C/E trying to make a name for themselves by cutting out things that could influence a persons thinking. I did four trips on the same ship 'Levenpool' three under Captain Carter, a very happy ship, good feeder and plenty of overtime for all, she was old (ex Empire Lionel) but clean, slow and lacking in modern navigational aids. Then another Master joined his name also began with a 'C' C------, but was shortened to four letters also beginning with a 'c', I will not give his name as his son is still alive and may look in at times. No overtime for anyone, unless it was essential for stations etc, food cut down, so creative cook could no longer be bothered, mail not sent if crew didn't have Master's level of reserves for crew members wages, I paid for numerous crew members mail, sent on my account. The crew hadn't changed for the previous three trips, on return to UK all crew members except C/E signed off and never signed on again, I was told by the Master I would never sail on another of the company's ships, his recommendation worked, the company appointed me to a new build and paid me to stay at home until she was ready to sail, only drawback being our projected three month trip became a 22 month trip, but a very happy ship once everyone settled down and realised we wouldn't be going through the Suez or Panama Canals for a long time, but we did see parts of the world Heineken couldn't reach.
So one man's actions could change a person's perspective of a company had that fourth voyage been their first experience of Ropners. Happy days
I sailed with Silver line, all prefixed Silver, the chemical ships birds of prey, the bulkers after geographical features, Fjord,Sand, Shore etc then later ones to Scottish rivers. The early ships(tramps)were named after trees
What can I say...left Oz after doing a cadetship on box boats and Ro Ros and joined a "famous" British tramp company. One of the best decisions I ever made. It was recommended to me by ex- _ _ _ _ boat engineers. Any ideas? Suffice to say if you saw a ship in any and all ports in the World, small or large and saw a vessel named "Somethingbank" any seafarer worth his salt would know the company. Let alone want to sail on her....
Second giveaway......usually the smartest ship in the dock!!!
