#133.. I learned very early on John, the sea could be a hard taskmaster, and like most things in life you only get out what you put in. It had its usual poseurs and those there for the ride , the bully’s the procrastinators, the knowalls, you learned to make your own decisions and learned those who gave good advice and those who liked to hear themselves talk. Like all walks of life you were in an industry which was there for profit making and you were a tool only of those making the good life for themselves and their Immediate friends and family. Yourself and you alone decided on what course you were going to take as regards morals or lack of them , you grew up faster than any younger person ashore ever had to do. It was your life and you managed it come hell or high water. What you finished up as depended on oneself , but like motor cars there were all different models. To me it started as an adventure it finished up as a livelihood or for finer wording a profession. It should not be a problem for any proper seaman to have to depend on what type of ship as a ship is a ship is a ship is a ship is a ship and evermore shall be so, as long as it floated in water. And any different peculiarities it had could soon be learned

If we had the magical time machine I would like to take myself off to the 20s and 30s. At time when all men wore hats and women wore French knickers. The Charleston, Scott Joplin and jazz. There is a prominent Tory who must share my interest in this era, Jacob Rees Mogg.
The modern day Bertie Wooster, rumour has it he retires to bed in an ankle length striped nightshirt complete with his old school tie and cufflinks. The nightshirt must be very loose fitting because he has six children.

#135.. Louis I have always been averse to hats as always believed what people said that they made you go bald prematurely. However I find the idea of a loose fitting nightshirt as quiet appropriate for this day and age. Especially if on a ship as with a following wind could stand on the breast hook and maybe get an extra knot out of her. Cheers JS

    John,
I have been a high annual mileage driver for nearly 40 years and have a little personal rule which proves to be right time after time. Avoid drivers who wear hats while driving, regardless of hat type, age or sex. Worst ones are 30+ years old wearing baseball caps.

My father gave me that advice many moons ago, but also beware of drivers smoking pipes - they are normally slow thinkers and thought that smoking a pipe made them look intelligent
