Re: Double Dr's
Only had to even think of giving a DR once, and that was to a very bad piece of work in the Chinese crew. Refused to come to bridge to be logged, did not see him ever turn too and always veryrude at sunday inspections. When we DR'd him, Bosun was in tears as it turned out he was the chief commo in their village and he would give them and their families a hard time.

Re: Double Dr's
Late one night at Uni the security guard was walking around on the roof top just checking all was correct.
He saw a couple engaged in some form of sexual gamesmanship.
On enquiring as to what they were doing on the roof he was told to go and explore some books, mainly the Karma Sutra then he would understnd.

I think we had the best of times Victoria going to sea just post war, but sailing with old and young men who had experienced those war times and wanted to relax and taught us young lads how to relax also, and I just don't mean the girls in the then exotic places. We did things that would get us jailed today but in those days the victims (wrong word but cannot think of another) took things in reasonably good heart, it was known as high jinx rather than criminal intent, and there was certainly no criminal intent intended.
Recounting one of my experiences on my first trawler out to Iceland aged 13, (doesn't look far on a map, but takes 4 -6 days to get there depending on coast) I said I felt sick, I was taken to the foc'le tied to the rails facing for'd, first I was too scared to be sick which later turned into being entranced by the rollers coming towards me and all thoughts of sickness vanished for ever. Today those men who tied me to the rails would be jailed for common assault and the skipper censured, in our day we took it as part of the learning curve. As far as work was concerned on trawlers it was a case of get on with it and stop on regardless of age, when ashore there was a lot of time to make up as jovially as possible and we had some good teachers.

Re: Double Dr's
The Brazil Star carried 12 passengers. A gentleman passenger raised a complaint that he had allegedly been sexually molested as he slept.
This was a clear case of mistaken identity.
I was reliably informed that the alleged molester had been invited by the gentleman's wife to visit her in her cabin. The cabin was in darkness, he climbed into bed thinking the other person was the wife. This was a mistake anyone could make in the circumstances. After only a couple of minutes he realised that it was in fact the husband. He quickly vacated the cabin following the shouts and protests. The only evidence left at the scene were a pair of high quality go ashore flip flops, not the usual cheap ones sold in Port Said.
The gentleman did not suffer any lasting damage.

Re: Double Dr's
Once carried 12 Nuns (including one Mother Superior) out to the WCSA with one of PSNC's 12 passenger ships. They had a good sense of humour, never tried to convert us or preach to us. Once we'd gone from Blues to Whites they changed their Blue Habits to White habits. Only draw back for all the crew was that we were not allowed to take our shirts off on deck to work or bronzy, we all ended up looking like brown and white zebras once they'd all disembarked in Callao. Happy days.

Re: Double Dr's
The only double DR I witnessed was to a Glaswegian J/E. With the Master ringing for half ahead in reduced visibility and not getting an answer he eventually rang full astern. When the J/E came to the controls he pulled one Doxford lever back instead of both which while stopping also burst the fuel line. That illustrated the lack of ability of both the J/E & Master. Later in Copenhagen while waiting for the Pilot he arrived back with a female and proceeded to his cabin under everyone's gaze which added the conduct decline. He was one of several nutcases I met that went to sea as an alternative to National Service but was not concerned expecting to get another ship just before Christmas.

Re: Double Dr's
Interesting to hear your theory why the Master was to blame, if he was on the bridge and the J/E was in the ER, the J/E by not responding to the telegraph may have put the Master in a position where he (the Master) had no alternative but to ring astern. Were you on the bridge or in the ER, just curious.
Why was the J/E on the controls and where was the ER OOW (2/E, 3/E, 4/E depending upon time of day)
Who went to his cabin with a female, the Master or the J/E, not very clear

Re: Double Dr's
Did respond to this earlier but disappeared into the ether.
Why was the Master to blame, presumably he was on the bridge and not down the ER at the controls. If he was on the bridge and the J/E did not respond to the telegraph in a timely manner, he may have placed the Master/vessel in a position where-in the Master felt he had no option but to go astern. Was the J/E alone down below in fog, if so why? where was the ER-OOW (2/e, 3/e, 4/e) the J/e would not have been in charge of the watch. Where were you at the time of this incident, just curious
Who came back on board with a woman and went straight to their cabin, the Master or the j/e, makes a difference
