I was just looking at some photo's on my USB stick . I am sure many of you will have seen these elsewhere. What is lovely about the Derbyshire memorial is that rank counted for nothing and the names are all in alphabetical order.20180928_113946.jpg

One of the most tragic losses in British maritime history, and the largest British vessel ever to be sunk, the MV Derbyshire was a gigantic but severely flawed bulk carrier that disappeared during Typhoon Orchid in the South China Sea on September 9th, 1980.

In this video, we will examine the history of the Derbyshire and the shipping line for which it was built, and how a flawed design and outdated, inaccurate work practices, combined with the worst of nature's fury, helped to bring down what many considered to be a ship too large to sink, and how its loss ultimately helped to improve the quality of shipbuilding in the future.

Hi Paul , I would love to help but concerning photos of Derbyshire or her sister ships I have none. I have a connections with Bibby line as I worked for them twice over my sea going career. I spent my time on the LPG fleet and a stint on the two Methanol tankers . I am a member of the Bibby Group run by John Harding on face book. I think I have spotted on that group page that you are a member now yourself. I used to live in Hoylake and when I went across to Liverpool for a day I would often have a sit on the bench at that beautiful memorial. Although Derbyshire was gone before I joined Bibby's and I did not know any of her crew I would be be lying if I said I am not always moved anytime I visit there. I have attended the group reunion a couple of years ago and it was nice to catch up with a few old friends. Good luck in all you do and like seafarers we appreciate the efforts and hard work you have all put into getting the Derbyshire memorial erected and placed in a peaceful and beautiful setting.

It reminds me of the old Irish pass it off saying -erra shure it'll do, shur it'll be grand. If the builders called them death traps what chance had the crew - expenpable. They were a disgrace

The last thing in the world that Swan Hunters wanted was for one of these ships to fetch up on a beach in Ireland.
    kowloon_sinking.jpg
The MV Kowloon Bridge was built on the River Tees by Swan Hunter for Bibby Line and originally named English Bridge. In 1977, the vessel was renamed Worcestershire, as the fourth vessel to carry that name in the Bibby Line fleet. In 1979, the vessel was sold to Amroth Investments and renamed Sunshine.
The vessel was renamed a further three times, before then becoming known as Kowloon Bridge. The vessel's last voyage was between Sept-Īles, Canada headed for the River Clyde.

The Liverpool Bridge / Derbyshire all that ship ever did was kill people, I think she had a massive explosion which resulted in several deaths.

An hour long program was shown on TV in UK last night on the loss of the DERBYSHIRE, with Mr Paul Lambert being interviewed several times for his comments.
A very interesting account of the loss, the search and the reason why she sank.
