The Panamanian steamship BATEAU SS was built in by Riuniti, Palermo, Italy as the Italian Cargo ship Euro SS. In 1941 she was renamed BATEAU SS. She was torpedoed and sunk by gunfire from three German destroyers on March 29th, 1942, on a voyage from Iceland to Murmansk. Forty of her crew were killed. Six survivors were picked up by the destroyers.

Re: Help wanted in research of a WWII casualty
Rodney, you can buy 'repro' medals on ebay, generally they are marked 'copy' or just blank in which case you could have the medal engraved. I don't know how to insert a link but if you put 292804318275 into the search on ebay you will see an example (this one is £9.69p).

Re: Help wanted in research of a WWII casualty
#42 Is the photograph of a Liberty ship, so it is not the one built in Palermo, Italy as the Italians never built any Liberty ships, all Liberty ships were built in the USA. The 'EURO' shown is probably the second vessel of that name under the Italian flag
The vessel shown was built as 'Joseph H Nicholson' in June 1943 Yard Number 2144, she was purchased from the Greeks in 1960 her name under the Greek flag was 'Fotini Tsaviliris' she was scrapped in Trieste in December 1971.

Re: Help wanted in research of a WWII casualty
I was on a very similar designed vessel also a liberty ship but was classed as a C1A or to describe more accurately a C one A and not the Central Intelligence Agency , they were built as an armed merchant cruiser with a speed of up to 22 knots , when I was on her in 1966 she had permanent reefer boxes on each side of the fore deck for chilled and frozen cargo. A passenger bar built where the monkey island was originally .the original officers cabins built around the saloon was converted to accomodation for 12 passengers , and she was down to 18 knots if weather conditions were suitable. Owned by an American Company and managed by Saguenay Terminals of Montreal . JS

Dear Vernon,
Thank you for your message which has been forwarded on to us by Maritime and Local Collections. We hold the Central Index Register of Merchant Seamen which includes details of those serving on board British-registered vessels 1918-1941. The National Archives also hold a copy of the register on fiche and this has been digitised and made available (on a pay to view basis) from Find My Past. I checked this from home (since I am not on site to look at the originals until next year now) and found that there are 2 record cards for Frederick Henry Rowlands in the Register. These come from a part of the register known as the Combined Series (ref BT 364 at the National Archives). There were 2 cards: a CR1 and a CR2 card. CR1s were created when a seaman was issued with a discharge book – either at discharge from first vessel or if the previous book had been filled or lost.
Frederick Rowland’s card was issued at the time of his discharge from the Elstree Grange (official number 137405), June 1940. The back of the card records ‘First FG Ship’ indicating that it was his first foreign going vessel. The front of the card has some information including rating (fireman), date and place of birth and a physical description (5’9”, brown hair, brown eyes, fair complexion).
The other card is a CR2, which record engagement on individual vessels. The front of the card records his engagement on the Elstree Grange, stamped by the Newport Mercantile Marine Office 22/1/1940. His name has been written Frank first then this has been changed to Frederick. His rating is given as cleaner on this card. The back of the card has dates of engagement on board 2 further vessels, listed by official number:
148531 – 19/6/1940
137495 – 20/1/1940
There’s a website called the Crew List Indexing Project which has a useful database to look up ships by the official number - Crew List Index Project for more details.
There’s a medal listing for him on the National Archives site at Medal listing of Rowlands, Frederick Henry Discharge number: R204871 Date of... | The National Archives which you can download free of charge at the moment so worth a look if you haven’t already done this.
I hope that this information is useful – if you have access (or know a subscriber) to Find My Past then you can search the records on there. If you want copies we can do these from our original records for a small search fee – though I won’t be in to do any now until the new year. I hope that this helps! Best wishes,
Jo Smith, Archivist
