If anyone wants to know what a trench and pipe laying ship looks like have a look at the Jan Steen. GRT 2461 NRT 738. No doubt she will be somewhere on google . These are quite sophisticated vessels electronically wise and are DP licensed . JWS

    Hi John A
They could all have been overtaken by gas, nothing to say what she was carrying, I remember seeing pictures of First world war soldiers who had been gassed and remembering a bloke who was gassed on a tanker while cleaning tanks, all looked terrified out of their minds, and with a massive explosion when she sank, the same thing Gas.

I got a whiff. On on a tanker on the NZ coast Des, when going down the after pumproom foolishly to close a leaking valve. Came to with grinning Chinese faces above me ,they pulled me out , only after effects was a bit further twist in the nose as fell. On face. I knew nothing about it . Good job someone saw me go down. Was out the same afternoon playing golf with the old man , think it was the Napier golf course. That 19th. hole was a wonderuous place. JS

Des #12 raises a valid point, gas on a ship can be devastating.

But there have been so many mysteries concerning ships over the years, most still unanswered so there is no valid reason why this story could not be true.
Few years ago a catamaran was found off the Queensland coast, it sailed with about three on board.
When found no on one board, a meal all set out ready to eat and as far as I know even to this day still no explanation.

Possible the most famous the Marie Celeste, what happened there?
    Happy daze John in Oz.

An autopsy on any of the bodies could have proven if death was caused by gas. Were any of the bodies buried by normal practice, as a death cert. with the cause of death must have been knocking around. That many bodies with cause of death unknown would have caused a furore. A coroners court if lead to a verdict of unknown causes must have led to many theories . Which over the years and the advances in forensic science must have opened new ideas JS
