Drink

#35... vodka was the spirit of choice that I saw as the one most alcoholics went for. Brian... no smell as such other spirits and being water coloured did not attract too much attention. Most alcoholics it was a sense of them wanting to conceal their drinking. Jolly jack tar wanted the world to know how everyone to know how many pints he could get down his neck. There is a big difference between a drunk and an alcoholic. I mentioned the name of a ship a couple of years ago, and someone came back and said there was nothing wrong with the ship. A ship that had the wardrobe in the mates cabin fitted out as a bar with a fitted light and bar stool and could lock from the inside had a problem in my mind. Previous crew members used to say they could never find him. I wonder why. Wardrobe drinkers actually existed. JWS

The lad I referred to on the previous page was also drinking the hand cleaner, when he was on an oil rig, it does contain a little alcohol, he told me many men on oil rigs drink it, as obviously alcohol is completely banned on those rigs.

My son at the QA hospital in Portsmouth tells me of some horrible tales of alkies he has to try to save, some he has to tell them they only have a few weeks to live, Liver and Pancreas and the associated organs too damaged to have a transplant. This also includes 16 year old girls who have destroyed themselves with Vodka and are dying.
, I think that is why I have given up drinking like I once did as a young seafarer, I just have one small glass of wine with dinner on a Saturday and one small glass of wine on a Sunday,
I have a house full of whisky and RUM. and have been giving it away to friends and relatives.

Coming round to see you Brian don't give it all away before I get there. I think if one gets into their 80s and still living have had a good run. I was out to a meeting at the funny handshake club this morning but didn't stay for the celebrations as going out to another one in an hours time, this one getting picked up so will be able to indulge, but will only have 4 beers at the most as not driving. Reckon out here any more than 2 and your over the limit so don't have any. Too risky on losing the licence. I have had my share the same as most when at sea, but was never compromised by it. Most seamen knew when to stop, the few who didn't paid for it one way or another. I don't agree with this breathalising on ships, don't need a machine to know if someone is incapable or not. How do your mates the frogs get around drinking wine with every meal, do they get breathalized when getting their sweet.? Cheers keep the Napoleon Brandy to one side. Cheers JWS

Hi shipmates, drink at sea? rum every sunday tennants lager or harp larger, 4 cans a day only . but no spirit was allowed for the crew? the officers drunk gin by the case 12 bottles 1lt not pints, on some ships? drugs were making a start in my time weed and acid l.s.d {Not old money} on some ships, came across one serious addict a very nice man, on the bad stuff , how he pass the medical? I dont know !!! he was a D.H.U. from the army. Alcoholics were part of the crew they were many, and very heavy drinkers but they did the job.

in the early 1970's weed was starting to appear , was on a tanker where the 2/E was often high as a kite

Without googling it i agree with the post a very thin line between an alcoholic and a heavy drinker, If you google {Dipsomania } That is a person that craves alcohol as soon as he opens his eyes, Any alcohol that,s the difference between a heavy drinker and an alcoholic Terry.

Hi shipmates, drink at sea, on the weekend only . ship that had a crew bar very few back then, sitting on the poop deck with a few shipmates, on a deck chair, A glass of ice cold tennants lager with just a touch of lime, watching the log in the wake, in the tropics? somewhere going to santos / south america {happy days} no cares, no worries , 100% fit and well , many years ago priceless that was me?

When I was in the fire service, we had a guy, Dave, ex tanker man who liked his drink, not at work I might add, but we had a station officer who was a real old ruddy, anti drink, and would not join us even off duty. The part of the story to wind up the station officer was someone had brought back from the Netherlands some of the sprit that was the same colour as mets , name escapes me,, but in the office we had a bottle of maths to clean the notice board, anyway Dave had substituted the Dutch booze, and right in front of the station officer said, I,ve got to have a drink, and swigged the dummy maths, the station officers face was a joy to see, kt
