Brian, Thanks to Captain Houston,s niece who was the skipper of the M.V.Harmattan struck by an Indian gun boat during the Pakistan/ Bangledesh war 1971, I have his hand wrote report which he submitted to both J@C Harrisons and obviously the hulls insurers after he had to to leave his ship to be scrapped against his will. In his final notes he writes after re-boarding his vessel to oversee stabilizing her with cargo being lighted ashore by barges and dumping ballast before she was towed along side us on boxing day 1971, He writes in his report that the bond and the crews cabins had been emptied and stripped of all alcohol and anything of value, That,s what you call respect and religious faith double standards at its worse for not only the crew members who lost there lives but makes a farce of the ****** faith { No Drink } My backside Terry.

Could not agree with you more regarding a certain faith's attitude to Alcohol, supposedly banning its consumption.
Apart from observing them in casino's in London and in the bars and clubs in Shields and Newcastle, I have seen an increasing number of Ahmed's names in our local paper up before the Magistrates on drink driving charges.

Working for the MOD, they had their own drying out farm. I had it on good authority that their attitude was they would allow 2 visits only. Third time were out with all loss of pension rights. JS

It is a Terrible disease.
The husband of my step daughter, a fine man, his own business with world wide contracts with all the major Oil Companies.
Flies out to Oil Rigs, FSPOs, Oil and Gas terminals in Europe, in the Gulf States and Nigeria. He had it all.

He had been sexually abused by a Policeman when he was 9 and 10 years of age. The Cop was a friend of his fathers,
he told his Dad and he would not believe him , Eventually he was caught after a few years of abusing other lads and got Ten Years in Gaol for these other lads. .
Three years ago he went to his Dad`s house and sitting in the Lounge was the Cop, with his Dad. He went mad about it. His Dad still would not believe him.
He was going to have him prosecuted again, but when he found out the Perv Committed Suicide, it was in all the papers here.
So now he felt cheated for the second time, the perv had not been punished for his abuse. Then He changed, within himself, his wife would suspect he was drinking, and then started to find bottles of Vodka hidden around the house, in the garden shed and greenhouse and in his car in the spare tyre well. He went worse, His Dad didn't want to know about it. With no support from his Dad he hit the Vodka harder,
He admitted he had a problem and his wife paid £8,000 for four weeks in a Rehab near London. He came out worse than he went in. Lots of booze smuggled into the Rehabs.
He went worse and worse and she had to throw him out because it was affecting the children. He lost his driving license, breathalysed,
He could not complete his contracts and so lost the lot, He had lost Everything, he was sleeping rough in the park, in the winter, snow and rain. then he was arrested for stealing vodka from a store and sent to Strangeways Gaol for three months , came out back on the same again. back into Gaol again for drunken vagrancy.
We do not know where his today, he is missing he could just be a John Do in some morgue, a sad end of a Great Life.

So that is one cause for being an Alcoholic and the final effects of it.
It is not something to make fun of, it is a tragedy.

#never had a bar on any ship i was in ...just two or three cans a night .....but did get copius amounts back on board at every opportunity ....cappy

Its a great shame when you read these tales, I firmly believe that some people just loose themselves and when using the booze to blank things out they cant find a way back, I sailed a few times with a great friend of mine no names i found him a few times laying in the gutter literally i took him home on a few occasions he was right out of it but this was a guy who never drank at sea while on sea watches just like myself i had many a run ashore with him he would always have a few drinks like the rest but never to the point where he was so ill when i took him home by taxi on the second occasion, He got sacked from the RFA Ship he was in and never got back to sea, I was out one night a few months later and walked into a bar where his sister was a barmaid, I just happened to ask how he was at the same time giving nothing away, She broke down in tears he had passed away a few weeks earlier unknown to myself in a drying out clinic, I went back to his house on a number of occasions to see him but never got an answer at his door. It is a very sad illness indeed and takes no prisoners R.I.P. T........... Terry.

I thin there is a very fine line between he heavy drinker and someone addicted , those who had to have a drink will do just that , in QA Hospital October 2014 Portsmouth , the substance abusers were drinking the hand rub , they needed the alcohol sad , the smell is vile too

Alcoholics come in many forms and sometimes are not seen as such.
My grandmother was one of the heavy drinkers which many would call an alcoholic.
Every lunch time down to the pub for four half pints of Guiness then at night down there again for about half a dozen more and four or five gins.
I can remember as a young lad seeing in her kitchen the cases of bottled Guiness, care of my dad who was then transport manager for Guiness, and a couple of cases of gin.
But she was always in a very happy mood puffing on her Piccadilly smokes and she lived to 89.
By the standards of toady she would be classified as an alcoholic just for the amount she drank.
But there are some like a brother in law of mine, now gone, who would get very nasty after just two pints.
Then some like my father in law, an Irish police man who could drink any one under the table, until after four sons he had a daughter, never touched drop again and began the local Pioneer society.
