Pay

For me anyway while at Sea I got paid in cash after each completed trip,there at that time was no Banking Account payments! Also besides the Pay as Stewards we got good Tips from the Bloods as I have mentioned on here somewhere before.
So all in all we did quite well on each trip.
Always sent Money home to my dear Mum as well to help the Home Fires ! LOL

Will have to look for a Payslip ,but it was in the Region of 32 GBP per Month plus any overtime at Sea,then also picked up a bit more at times with working by when the Ship was awaiting her next trip,that was usually Two Weeks in Southampton on the Mail Run (The actual Mail Run took 6 weeks) or at most three Weeks in KG5 on the Round Africa Runs! (Round African Took around 6 to 7 weeks depending on the Ship you were on,as at one time it took us 8 weeks to complete the trip,due to breakdown along the Coast) Great times for sure!!

#39.. Marian the other 3 apprentices probably never let on to Ivan about all the 9 pences he missed out on and divided the spoils among themselves. With all the compound interest on all the money he would of at least be another 20 quid better off today. JS

I carried all my payoff slips for years only got rid of them when we moved from NZ to Aus in 72, but i kept one from the British Builder my last British ship.

12 days at 21shillings and 4pence a day
an amount of 12pounds 16 pence
fines 2 pounds 12shillings and 8pence
Income tax 14pounds 14 shillings
Union fees 3pounds 7shillings and sixpence
National insurance 15 pounds 10 shillings and 6 pence
Allotments 180 pounds
Subsistence allowance 10 pounds 2 shillings
Amount due on discharge 108 pounds 19 shillings 8 pence and one halfpenny
All for ten months of hell.

#44. Hope the fines went to a good charity Des. As regards your union fees if the shipowner had refused to deduct from your wages, which he had every right to do, the union would have died on the spot. Have still got old pay off slips somewhere but if I go rummaging around the wife kicks up merry hell so prudence is the word. Cheers JWS.

Only overtime we ever got was as an officers stewards living up on the boat deck along with the officers.
Chuckles Charnley the Chief officer insisted we got four hours per day as he said we had to be on call at all times at sea.
We did get it at the end of each voyage and had the chance to sign on for the next one.

As far as I can recall as officers stewards we were the only catering crew to get any overtime apart from Sundays at sea.

But with NZSC no matter how much time the second steward asked you to work there was never any overtime payment.

I was always a Company Contract man starting off a Cadet in C.P. at £32 p/m. First ship had Spanish Crew so had no idea how their pay was done. 2nd ship (Beaverfir) had London crew and at the end of every voyage we would all sign off articles on arrival in London and the crew would get there overtime pay and balance of wages paid in cash.
Later as Master on Cayman Islands and Cardiff registered vessels with Latvian and Philippine crew we used the British Articles but the ALC1 was sub headed NFD, Non Federated). Used to collect new articles including O.L.B. from the M.C.A. in Liverpool.
The Latvian and Philippine crew would sign their contracts in Riga (manning agents h.q.) or Manila. On the articles there was a section were salaries were meant to be entered (in days gone past the shipping master would just enter something like "As per N.M.D. rates") we put in "Pay as per Company Contract". The only other section was voyage length (12 month running agreement) and latitudes between which the articles related to (65 deg N/S).
The Latvian Officers were salaried and paid monthly (no overtime), the Philippine crew had monthly allotments deducted from their salary and could also sent extra remittances home as long as they had a balance of wages.
Monthly I submitted electronically a portage bill for all on board that listed all deductions on board such as cash advances in port, bond and slop chest purchases from the Masters bond, overtime hours worked and excess o/t beyond their contracted hours.
I would then receive back a balance of wages calculation for each member on board electronically whish I printed out and gave to the individuals. Always carried a decent amount of cash on board for in port cash advances, bond and slop chest purchases and if a Filipino was paying off always got extra cash as they wanted their pay off in cash rather than waiting for their B.O.W. to be paid into their home bank. This was if they could take cash home (U.S. dollars) they could get a far better $/peso exchange rate on the black market in Manila than the official $/peso exchange rate the company used.

in often wondered after seeing what the phillipins and other foriegners got on passenger vessels paywise ..did the tramp and tanker companies pay british rates to them sometimes or is it still the rip off rates say on BP today

#49.. Irish Ship Management... 1970 Chinese crew 29 pounds a month. Philipino crew 27 pounds a month. Master 33 pounds a day. Ch.Eng. 32 pounds a day. Mate 31 pounds a day. At the end of 12 months 500 pounds bonus from which 50 pounds was deducted for every day the ship was off charter due to default of ship. That was consumed in the first month. 1998 sailed on Russian vessel where the Russian crew were on similar wages,to those mentioned the master was on about 42 pounds a month. Which I think at that time was below. The Philipinos wages and 20 plus years later. You can't really differentiate , shipowners pay by nationality and as I have said before have never seen these fantastic wages that the International maritime unions advertise. Cheers JWS

Ivan, That was what you explain in most of my jobs to a T, If i got 3 hours a day overtime it usually covered my income tax once i got my bond and bar bill i could usually work out my pay off to within a few quid, Happy days Terry. :th_thth5952deef:
