I must get my old Payslip out by memory as Asst Steward with UCL in 1958 was on 32 GBP a Month with lots of OT ,and then the Tips I got from the Bloods in each Port on their Leaving the Ship.
That put quite a lot in my skyrocket each 6 weeks on the Mail Run,and even more on the Intermediate Runs which wee +- 8 to 10 Weeks depending on the Ship.
Totals approx. for the Six Weeks with full Tables (2 sittings of 14 each meal ) that was hard graft ,that's 28 hungry Bloods 3 Times a day plus Kids Teas and the rest! came to about 120 Quid plus Overtime which could vary average 125 Hours = 150 GBP Total = +- 270 Quid on Payoff Minus any Subs I made which were not much at all. Except of that there was a standing amount of some 40 Quid sent to my Dear Mum each trip, so the Pockets were still heavy on arrival at Payoff Port,
Intermediate Runs even better !
Then on the Town ,Girls ,Grog, Good Times and Clothes always looked a Million Bucks,no wonder the Chicks fell for us LOL
Cheers
Vernon I think it was about £36 10s 0d a month and overtime 4/- (four bob) an hour arond that time.
