Re: arctic convoys
I and Ron Manderson of the batcave, had a friend, who was on the Arctic convoys, unfortunately he died on my birthday five years ago. Bob Fairley.
He gave us both a DVD of his trip to Russia as a guest of the Russian Government. They were treated as the Heroes they were, All paid for, Hotels and transportation,.
They were later taken by ship to the Arctic Ocean and every ship had been located, and at each site they had a Service and wreaths thrown over,
A Big Parade in Murmansk was given in their honour.
Britain has chosen to ignore them the berstereds.
If I knew how to put a DVD on here I would , it is very interesting.
Brian.

Re: arctic convoys
Hello,
After the original post a couple of weeks ago I contacted the MOD. At that time they didn't know what day, who was attending, whereabouts in Liverpool.........etc
Anyway, it is now MONDAY 31st October. Reception at Town Hall at 12noon.
Below is a copy of the email received yesterday.
Mrs Shackleton
In answer to your question. Guests are expected to arrive at 1130 at Liverpool Town Hall for a reception which will begin at 1200. There will be a ensemble provided by the Royal Marines Band during the reception and a performance of Beating Treat in the square outside the Town Hall. The reception will offer a chance for guests to mingle and chat as well as have some lunch and a drink. The reception is due to end at 14:00. "BEATING TREAT" ?? Is that 'Beating the Retreat??
Following the reception there will be a chance to go on board a Royal Navy Destroyer. However I will repeat what I have said to others. Due to the nature of the ship’s role, there is a chance that it could be called away at the last minute. You should also be aware that it can be quite a challenge getting on board as it involves walking up and down a steep gangway so please bare this in mind before heading down to the cruise terminal as there want me anything on the quayside. The weather at the cruise terminal can be very cold at that time of year so you are advised to dress appropriately. ( I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE A HUGE CHALLENGE TO WALK FROM THE TOWN HALL TO THE CRUISE TERMINAL- MAYBE THERE WILL BE TRANSPORT.....)
If your daughters do wish to attend then please forward their details to me and I’ll put them on the guest list by the end of next week (7 Oct 16). Please be aware that we would only be able to accommodate up to two. Once we have their details then I can send out more information by post.
The details we need are;
Rank / Title
Full name
Postnominals (if applicable)
Address
Email Address
Contact telephone number
Hopefully you found this useful. Please get in touch if you have any more questions.
Kind Regards
Niall
Our 2 eldest daughters will be going to represent me and their Grandad because Pete and I don't return from India until the next day. I am so happy that they are able to go - giving up a day's pay. Youngest can't get away from work, which is just as well in the circumstances ,as they will only allow 2 tickets. WHERE they are going to find Veterans of the Convoys, I can't imagine ! !
Watch this space. If there isn't too much football on the NorthWest News then it might warrant a mention. Battle of the Atlantic only got TWO minutes a couple of years ago......
Regards
Brenda

Re: arctic convoys
Please find enclosed a insert from Royal Navy bulletin.
75th Anniversary of the Arctic Convoys to be marked at a special event in Liverpool
The Ministry of Defence, together with Liverpool City Council and The Royal British Legion, are inviting veterans of the Second World War Arctic Convoys to a special day of events in Liverpool to mark their 75th anniversary on Monday 31 October.
A reception at Liverpool Town Hall, followed by a ceremony on board a Royal Navy destroyer moored at the city’s Cruise Terminal, will pay tribute to those who endured what Winston Churchill once described as “the worst journey on Earth,” honouring the many brave members of the Armed Forces and the Merchant Navy who took part in the mission to help supply the Russian Front during the Second Word War, from the UK through the Arctic Circle to the Russian port of Arkhangelsk.
The events in Liverpool are part of a year of commemorations in the UK and overseas to mark the 75th Anniversary. Veterans and their families will be joined by Defence Minister, Lord Howe, the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Philip Jones, and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Roz Gladden, who will all attend the reception, hosted by the Royal British Legion, which will include music from the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, Plymouth.
To mark the occasion, a Royal Navy destroyer will be moored at Liverpool Cruise Terminal, Liverpool Docks and veterans will be invited to tour the ship, hosted by the Ship’s Company.
British Arctic Convoy veterans are invited to apply for spaces at the events by no later than Monday 10 October 2016.
1. All British Arctic Convoy Veterans are invited to apply to attend the event in Liverpool on 31 October. Anyone wishing to attend should send their details, including information on their role in the Arctic Convoys, to People-DSSec-CECTAug3@mod.uk.
Space is limited and Veterans will be allocated invitations first. Any requests to bring a guest or requirements for a carer will be taken into consideration.
2. Events are being held around the world to mark the 75th anniversary of the Arctic Convoys. On 30 August the Russian Consulate hosted British veterans on the Royal Yacht Britannia to honour the occasion. And the following day, HRH Princess Anne joined British and Russian veterans in the Russian port of Arkhangelsk to commemorate those who took part in the operation.
3. The Arctic Star was approved by Her Majesty The Queen in December 2012 and first issued in March 2013. It is granted for operational service of any length north of the Arctic Circle (66 degrees, 32’N) from the 3 September, 1939, to the 8th May, 1945, inclusive by the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy. The Arctic Star is intended to commemorate the Arctic Convoys and is designed primarily for the ships of the convoys to North Russia and their Escorts. Applications for an Arctic Star can be made via the Veterans UK website.
4. The Royal British Legion’s work is encapsulated in its motto: Live On – to the memory of the fallen and the future of the living. The Legion is the nation's biggest Armed Forces charity providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their families. It is the national custodian of Remembrance and safeguards the Military Covenant between the nation and its Armed Forces. It is well known for the annual Poppy Appeal, and its emblem the red poppy. The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Philip Jones, said:
“The veterans of the Arctic Convoys braved pursuit by unseen enemy vessels and some of the worst weather imaginable to bring supplies to the Russian front line at the height of the Second World War.
“I am delighted to invite these heroes and their families to be honoured in Liverpool for the 75th anniversary of their very first mission and would encourage anyone who served on the convoys to apply.”
Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladden, said:
“The Arctic Convoys were a key part of Britain’s survival during World War Two, and it is amazing to think of the men who braved those treacherous journeys, putting their lives on the line in those relentless conditions.
“I am hugely proud that Liverpool is taking the lead in marking the 75th anniversary – many of the convoys set sail from Liverpool so it is fitting that the event takes place in the city. I look forward to hosting the event where we will honour the brave members of the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy.”
Roger Ellison, age 89, a Merchant Navy Arctic Convoy veteran and retired Liverpool marine pilot plans to attend the commemorations in October. He said:
“I’m really happy to be joining other veterans from the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy on 31 October in Liverpool. I set sail on 31 October 1944 sailed to Murmansk, Russia, from Pier Head Liverpool on RMS Scythia, an armed troop ship but a Cunard White Star vessel so this anniversary in October is very important to me. During the voyage we encountered some of the very worst weather imaginable, but the real heroes were those who undertook several passages on Convoy, and those who did not return.”
The month of October marks 75 years since the first Arctic Convoy set sail from Britain and arrived in Arkhangelsk, Russia.
The convoys provided Russia with considerable resources. Over the course of the Second World War, convoys delivered between 3½ and 4 million tons of cargo of all kinds, from thousands of tanks and aircraft to vital fuel and machinery.
The cargo was delivered on rough seas that were often occupied by U-Boats. Convoy losses on the route were very high, and 5.7 per cent of ships which sailed were lost compared with the overall convoy loss during the war of 0.33 per cent.
In 2012, to honour those who served on the convoys, the Arctic Star was instituted by the British Government. To date 18,050 Arctic Stars have been issued.

Re: arctic convoys
The tireless effort that members of this site and others associated with the Merchant Navy and just caring people have done a great job in shining some needed light on the 'Forgotten Service'.
Thank you.
