North Star
Watched a very interesting program last night on Mighty Ships!
It was all about the Container Ship North Star!
What goes on as regards the Container loading and off loading is incredible at times, and the time frames they must try and keep!
I wonder if anyone else has seen this Episode??
Mighty Ships Season two Episode 5
This is just a short part of it!

In a battle against time, money, sub-zero temperatures, and unforgiving waters, cargo ship North Star makes a 1,600-mile journey from Tacoma to Anchorage. Join captain Richard Cadigan and his committed crew as they put their perfect on-time record, not to mention their lives, on the line to deliver everything from food to pick-up trucks to the people of Alaska. To complete their mission, they must overcome perilous obstacles, one delivered by Mother Nature, the other by a failing diesel engine.

Re: North Star
Hi Vernon.
I watched the later part of that; what got me was the ships construction, there was a huge gap in between the containers on the foredeck, and the same at the stern, I said to my wife if they ever pooped a huge sea over the stern it would drag her stern down. maybe they have a drainage system that would empty her out, I certainly hope so.
Cheers Des

Re: North Star
Hi Des
The Front of her is known as a Tortoise Head, this eliminates any of the Containers on her Forward Deck getting hit by Huge waves at Sea,unlike some other Container Ships where if in really heavy Seas can wash those Containers off and about causing massive damage to the Ship itself!
The Tortoise Head lets the masses of Water just run off her !
Ingenious !
Cheers
Be on the lookout for other Episodes or tape them if you have the IQ Box!

Re: North Star
The manoeuvring of the Ship when in both Pots is something too, with all that Ice to handle it was a difficult task to get into Port Anchorage, those Tugs are really powerful little beggars!
That Chief Engineer had a hard time with the Oil Leak on the one main Engine too,but they eventually got it done!
Also not to be outdone nor forgotten are those Truck Drivers ,how they handle those loading moves with the precise backing in of those large Containers Heck some driving!
I used to Drive Heavy Duty Trucks in SA bit could never do what those Guys do!
Cheers
