And if a gantline was not deemed safe enough for use aloft or over the side on a stage, And you had no spare lashings you would cut it up and use it for lashing, And yes as you say I have put back splices in them, One scenario was using an old gantline for dumping dunage over the side using the ships gear to clear the decks on a slip hitch bundle it together tie it up haul it on the sling and let it go and with a back splice in both ends it would not fray and could be used over and over Just my experience also getting expressed.
Re: Words we will never use again.
was that not called a blonden wire{I think} jp
Re: Words we will never use again.
John, I think you are getting confused with a preventer or sometimes known as an insurance wire. Which was additional to the guys of the derricks, But as I say it was all a long time ago, So any other thoughts or memories share the brains lads. All roads lead to rome Terry. :)
Re: Words we will never use again.
Preventer wire and insurance wire tow entirely different things, you're right in the fact that a preventer wire was on the derrick as a 'back-up' system to the guys, but had nothing to do with insurance and was not an insurance requirement and not used on the lazy or schooner guys. An insurance wire usually 4" or 5" diameter was carried on a reel normally situated under the foc'le head and was a compulsory wire required by insurance for towing purposes etc.
Well enough nautica for now, as I'm off out dancing aided by a couple of Pussers rums

John I think it was TirFor and it had a very flexible wire rope. One end of it could be fastened to a fixed point and the rope passed through from front to rear. When it was set up you took up the slack and there was a lever like a jack handle which you levered back and forth. Not a very good description but if you seen one you would know what I am on about.
Re: Words we will never use again.
yes bob about 3ft long handle and a trip to slacken of we used them a lot to move machinery in a few factories like Tate and Lyles bibbys and fords a very handy tool I think proper rigged you could lift up to 5 tons with one/ jp
