I actually enjoyed the time I spent on container ships. Sailed on the Dart America and Atlantic switching from one ship to another - 6 weeks on. 2 weeks off and then 6 weeks on and then a month off. The only reason I left was that mate of mine who was sailing on the ferries told me what wages they paid and that they were looking for Purser Catering Officers. Went for the interview and was hired straight away.

They call it progress and if you like microwaved meals then that is fine. But thta is how things have evolved over time, we have come along way from the days of 15th century ships. One benifit of the modern container ships is the accomodation, from some photos seen it is more like a hotel than a ship.
