Those rope tails on the fall blocks were a standard thing on many of the CP ships I sailed on, they were a hang over from the cruising days of the Empress boats when the lifeboats were used as passenger tenders in anchorage ports and if the seas kicked up and made recovery dangerous then the rope strops would be used to attach the boat to the falls for recovery, it being hooked onto the fall blocks at the next safe opportunity.
With the new totally enclosed, davit launched lifeboats of today it is an almost mandatory requirement to have a wire hanging off strop permantley attached to the davit and this is attached to the boat when anyone enters the boat to do routine maintenance at sea. There have been occasions of lifeboats lowering themselves at sea when personnel doing routine maintenance have accidently trigged the release mechanism. Nowadays lifeboats seem to injure more people than they save.

I too agree with Marion about the buttons, and I also think your response was over-the-top Chris.
I had a good laugh over this thread, and had the buttons been in effect you would have received both a "like," because I thought it was funny, and a "thanks" for giving me a chance to put a zinger on a very good friend of mine. No buttons...so I posted a thanks to you instead.
I appreciate the "like" and "thanks" buttons, because some of my posts are stories and not written to encourage opinions; therefore, without the buttons, I have no way of knowing if I have wasted my time posting. The volume of readership is no barometer, after all we are supposed to have 8,000 members and lots of time one is lucky to get 100 people listed as readers. It seems that no more than about 20-30 members post, some more than others. So if I get a few likes on a story it tells me to continue, if nothing, it's time to take another tack.
Your opinion on the buttons was well taken, that's your right and good on you, but your shots at Marion borders on being mean spirited, or you have a motive that I am not aware of.
I am entering the fray because I enjoy both your and Marion's posts; Also, both of you have given me a good laugh. I hope you both continue.

In response I am not prepared to prolong the matter ad infinitum, however I expressed an opinion like every member does on this site. I was then asked to explain myself, like some kind of offender. It does not matter who asked me to explain myself, man, or in this case women, the answer I gave would have been the same. I am entitled to an opinion and I do not expect to have to explain myself, every time I voice it, ( unless it is a matter of specialist knowledge ), and that provoked the reply which I don't apologize for. If people don't like it then so be it.
It appears to me that people don't like my reply because it was a woman I replied to. Well if the woman wishes to be a member of this site then surely in this time of equality for all, she should receive exactly the same treatment as male members. I did not swear or use filthy language, ( like some jokes submitted on this site by women ), I presented my feelings on the matter in a firm and resolute way and had it been to a man, I have no doubt nothing would have been said, but all hell breaks loose just because it was a woman. Lets get things equal on here and not have a law for men and something totally different for women. E Nuff said, and as far as I am concerned End Of, whether you agree or disagree, it is entirely up to you, you all know now, exactly how I feel about it.

Sea Princess had to cancell a cruisr earlir this week due to engine room problems, problems that have been ongoing since early July.
The modern ships need power to launch the lifeboats. Waht happens if there is a total power failure on one of these ships and they need to launch?
The life rafts are OK as they can be manualy handled, but nowadays we rely so much on electronic controls.
