Each to his own, but personally I thought the 'like' button was a nice way to say 'thankyou' to someone for posting something interesting or of interest without going overboard, don't know where the cliquish thing comes into it, and whilst not being particularily up on computer security I just wonder how removing the 'like' button improves it. As for being open in conversation, haven't we always been just that, are we going to get a site now littered with short posts of 'I like that'. The old adage to my mind still holds true 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'

#22 &23, I agree with Ivan and Cappy on this debate of the like and thank you buttons. As someone who hits both on a regular basis to show my appreciation of an entertaining or well written post, also just as important a post that is informative and educational to me a landlubber. I have to say I'm rather disappointed that no poll/opinion was sought in this matter. How it has anything to do with security of the site is confusing so perhaps someone can explain this aspect to a technophobe. Of the two other sites that I visit on a regular basis both of which have been hacked also, only this site has had more changes than a vaudeville act to supposedly counteract the same again!.....
Please explain Chris why you think it's "cliquish" to use these buttons. :confused: As Ivan stated we will now have to use even more space to acknowledge a post when a like or thank you would have sufficed.
Apologies for invading your original thread Chris, no slight was intended on your amusing if somewhat alarming post.:)
Just read Doc's post about 'errors' so presume Like & Thank you buttons are to be resumed:)

No Chris you don't have to explain yourself, you are quite right there, but most of us are not afraid to explain our reasonings so that others do understand our reasoning which may be quite logical when explained, but making bald statements just confuses the issue (yes I know I'm easily confused) and is not helpful. Are you using the word cliquish to say that we who are polite (mostly) only thank each other as a support group and not support anyone else. Now that really may put off new people from joining and I have noticed a lot of new names contributing lately and that is nice to see and we don't want to alienate them by being surly, we want to encourage their contributions by giving them an appropriate 'like' or 'thankyou' is that too much to ask?

Getting back to the theme of the original posting.
Most flag sates will accept a "controlled" launching where the free fall boat is lowered into the water using its recovery davit. The SOLAS regs. only require that lifeboats be "lowered to the water and exercised in water" once every three months. Whenever it was safe to and we were loaded we would do a free fall just for the experience, but this was on 5000 ton chemical tankers, not huge bulkers. Most, if not all, serious incidents with lifeboats have occurred with conventional, fully enclosed, davit launched lifeboats where the "on load" release gear has failed before the boat has been lowered into the water but is clear of the ships side and hanging in the falls.
