Only infestation we ever had on ships to my knowledge were cock roaches, bloody awful disgusting things they are too!
Brian as to native rather than if you will ordinary rats (remember Ratty form Wind In The Willows) We had the most amazing native water rats in Sydney, they were HUGE. They lived along the waterfront in the east of Sydney Rushcutters Bay, Darling Pt, Double Bay etc. Around the Cruising yacht Club in RCB they were so numerous & bold. Our home was Double Bay on the water where we in winter had them run up the trees entering the apartment & eat the fruit on the side board. Never ever killed one. Yes Minor birds by the 100's though with an air gun.
We had bush rats at the farm, only attacked them in our garage as they had a propensity to eat the electrical wiring in your cars engine bay, god knows why? Did that twice to me the pests, a jaguar & a Range Rover. Cost me a fortune + one occasion left the garage in a RR beginning of summer turned on the A/C to hear an appalling tearing grinding noise, then blood came out the central dash vents, it was baby bush rats that had been born there...Another occasion drove to Pt Macquarie on the Nth Coast for a weekend en route home said to the wife, "god the mangroves smell bad" only to find out when home the next day & the stench was far worse that it was in fact a local Pt McQ rat who had gone to sleep on the warm engine & got cooked when we took off for home. We had driven for some 4 hours at speed so he was over done.
When my left leg was crushed, bone splintered and the flesh ripped off on Sea Island I was taken ashore in a boat at around 2am to Ras Tannurah, The Arab moored the boat and told me to stay. I waited for over two hours.
I saw my ship sail out for Singapore, and sat alone in the dark with my leg in screaming pain and bleeding quite heavily I really felt alone in the world.
Then I reallised I was not alone. The Biggest Rats I have ever seen covered in long hair, big black ones were sniffing along the jetty, I guess they could smell blood. and then one at a time jumped in the boat. I was using a brush as a crutch and I spent an hour beating these carnivours off with the broom stick, It was more than a little scary.
If they had got me there would only have been a skeleton left of me.
When a taxi turned up with his head lamps on they scarpered. and I was much relieved.

At the Vindicatrix they told us that there is more protein, pound for pound, in a Cock roach than there is in a beef steak. They sure had a lot in the food on that one.
On the Nicholas K, London Greek, Cockroaches were the only fresh meat we had.
Cheers
Brian.
