Infestation

How did the weavils get into the cereals,corn flakes rice crispies etc.On the Cotopaxi having cereal for breakfast when the milk was poured on all the weavils would float to the top,how did they get into a sealed wax bag.If barley or rice went into the soup the top of the soup was covered in weavils.I had a toilet roll on the press,I folded it and skimmed it around the top of the soup.The other problem was the jaspers,give the pantry a good flitting out,that would kill the jaspers but they pushed the egg from their backside and that would incubate and off we go again.The jaspers were also in the accommodation,Channel Night I packed my case got a bit of a wammie and suspended the case from the deckhead,I did'nt fancy taking any of those b------ds home.

Hi Shipmates, between trips to sea I used to work , one of the jobs I did was at a flour mill in cardiff, as a worker, now closed down, on the 4th floor, lifting/stacking 144lb sacks of flour 12, 0n a pallet, 8am till 4,30pm for 12 weeks. Ref Rats you arrive on the 4th floor by man-lift and switched on the lights the floors, were alive with rats but as soon as the lights came on no more rats? where they were was a mystery? to find them was impossible, Rats some were big could be found on the ground floor in the daytime only , they seem to go there to feed on the fresh grain and pellets. I became pretty good with a shovel, and sent many to rat heaven.... the bodies were put in the dock for the fish.

Beautiful warm sunshine morning, flat calm sea, gentle breeze. All the lads turned to aloft painting the foremast and samson posts. Suddenly on the horizon a huge black cloud like a tropical rainstorm. The cloud hit us, not rain but locusts, millions of them all over us and the ship. They were stuck on the fresh paint, paint pots full of crawling insects. The decks were covered in locusts and as all doors and portholes were open they were in the accommodation.
First and only time I have seen this.

You have just confessed to an offence


Water voles are currently declining at a rapid rate. Water voles are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) from killing or taking by certain prohibited methods. Their breeding and resting places are fully protected from damage, destruction or obstruction, it is also an offence to disturb them in these places.

That is the first time I have known a Deck officer cough to an offence without blaming the engineers

Grain Store was getting knocked down in the late 1960's by the Alex'Dock Bootle,next door to it was the Strand Pub,having a few pint's with my work mate's all of us docker's.anyway a bloke a the bar had a sack bulky with a lot movement from it we were all guesting what was in he came over with his pint and sat at our table.We said to him what's in the sack,he said he was the Rat Man,he had been next door,to the Grain Store were he caught them,told us how he catche's them,he put's a cluster Light in leaves it off while the room his dark,then when they can hear lots of them moving Round,they switch the light on and they freeze picks them up by the tail one at time,and fills the sack up over hundred, in the sack,gave us a look in the sack.Ken.
