Those containers will be a navigation hazard and could possibly sink another ship that collides with them.
Then of course the Pollution by the hazardous contents, also the fuel on board.that is bound to leak out. killing fish and sea animals.

I read somewhere that there could be as many as ten thousand containers either floating or on the sea bed.
Have just sighted pictures of the MOL Comfort stern sinking in 4000 metres. I saw it on G captain.

Other way round i sailed on mostly box boats but 30 years ago they were half the size they are now and OK they had fast turn around but we still managed a few nights up the road its like anything else the bigger they come the more there is to go wrong
Was Ch.Mate on container ships nearly 40 years ago. they weren't so bad Brian. They were a lot smaller in capacity
and life then was slightly slower.
has anyone had news of any further updates since the After Half sunk, no news of the Destination was given for the Fwd half. no further updates from gcaptain since the sinking, ?
Brian, I wonder if there are records kept of how many lost at sea containers are at any time adrift on the surface & their general position when lost as they are a sea hazard? I do know there are systems whereby the owner of the container can have a electronic tag whereby they know everything about their container, i. e. where it is at any given moment & if refrig whether the temp is correct with temp records kept on owners computer. Have heard they if not correct temp send e to master of vessel to see what is the problem.
latest update is, towage of forward section is being hampered by adverse weather, still no let up, progress slow but stable so far, destination is rumoured to be oman.
When I attended the Court of Inquiry on the sinking of the Pool Fisher in 1980 it was suggested that she may have been holed in collision with a container from a container ship that had sunk a few miles to the west.
Maybe a sattelite transmitter on each container would be a big help in locating them when they go adrift. epirb
