Guess who inventions

Hi Richard,
I was in Seattle in 1990 at Lake Washington watching an Air Display with the US Marine Corps Harrier Jets dancing. A Yank said what a fantastic machine it was and I guess you Limies would love to get your hands on One.
He would not believe that they were invented by the British and then those on display were probably built in the UK as well.
.
I like the Yanks , they are so Naive and childlike in their observations.
I also like their generosity as they always buy me a couple of beers.

Brian, I feel it is due to their lack of knowledge of the outside world lack of what we know as 'general education' or things that go on that do not have US involvement. It is in a way quite naive as you say, it is not malicious just ignorance. Also feel possibly that the education system does not teach them to look outside their own environs, let alone have the curiosity to do so. I think the latter we are born with or if not our parents or school instilled-taught us to have. Real world history or general knowledge is not one of their, yes generalisation interests. What always worries me is to discuss politics with an educated American & find he knows bugger all about his own(forget Europe or elsewhere) you know more & it often does not seem to bother them. Talk to them about Viet Nam they often know nothing of the French involvement there let alone the Borneo-Malaysian shenanigans. Recently we were discussing Afghanistan over a lunch & there were two ex US military gentlemen there around 50-55 years of age, well nothing of the Great Game or the history of that country was known, how say is that? I steered them towards some great books on the subject even wrote their titles etc down though doubt they will pull them of the bookshelf & read them. Ha ha maybe a Kindle ):

I was having a drink with Richard Dreyfus, the Movie Star in a hotel in Montego Bay after a swim with him.
I was telling him about going to Viet Nam to bring out the French Foreign Legion after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu,
He said " I dont recall there being any French in there with us?." I said this was in 1954/5.
He says "We didnt go in there until 1966" He could not understand what I was on about.
I had to give him a History lesson on Viet Nam.
being a French Colony called French Indo China, with Cambodia and Laos. "Never heard of that one" he says
Then the Japs invaded, "Did we get them out?", No says I , `it was the British`.
Then the French wanted it back after we cleared out the Japs, ` I didnt know that` he says.
Then the Viet Minh wanted independence from France and so General Giap eventually defeated the French in a huge battle at Dien Bien Phu. French having 18,000 casualties. "I knew nothing of that" he says.
Then you , the Americans decided to invade an independent country and the flip flops defeated you, supposed to be the mightiest Military in the world. How embarrassing for you.
He could hardly speak when I finshed, `No one told us about that ` he says.
`So next time you make a movie of Viet Nam just call me.` he bought me another Rum and Coke. and shook my hand.
We drank together from there to Florida and onto New York where he got off.
He does not drink alcohol, just the coke.
As we were going up the Hudson towards Pier 90 he was on deck as we passed the site of the Twin Towers,
He was just in his underpants and a dressing gown, which was open, He was shouting `Bomb The Bastars` and shaking his fist.
I told him to go inside as all the women were laughing at his fancy underpants. I have the photos.

I've just watched a YouTube video of a supply ship leaving Aberdeen Harbour to work on the rigs. There was an American girl who was quite insistent that we should add the word 'New' to the Scottish harbour to differentiate it from the correct and original Aberdeen in the Good ol' US of A - which only has a paddling pool and no harbour:D

Was she a blonde by any chance??

Has to be. comes from a small town in Washington State pop 16,000 whose only claim to fame is that it cans salmon- but doesn't fish for them.
