on the passenger ships, MAA, Master at Arms.
After Supertankers of 100,000 tons, came the VLCCs, tankers over 200,000 tons, Very Large Crude Carriers,
then ULCCs ,tankers over 400,000 tons, Ultra Large Crude Carriers.
DPS, Dynamic Positioning Ships.
ECR, Engine Control Room, CCR, Cargo Control Room. UMS, Unmanned Machinery Space. CCCTV, tv to monitor the UMS.
RADAR. WT, Wireless Telegraphy. GMDSS. a certificate to authorise to operate a ship radio station.
DTI. Department of Trade and Industry. BOT, Board of Trade. F.G. Foreign Going, HT. Home Trade.
I am sure there are many others, maybe John Saborn can come up with a few more that are used in the off shore industry.
Maybe we can make up a Dictionary so people could look up the meaning of various initials.

There are a few ex riggers on site who would have a better knowledge than me of terms used on rigs as have been employed on same for indefinite periods. My time on same was shifting them location to location. Cheers John Sabourn

My memories of Engine Room abbreviations for ratings are these CLN =CLEANER, F/C = FIREMAN CLEANER, F/M =FIREMAN, FM/WT = FIREMAN WATER TENDER, GRS/CLN =GREASER CLEANER, GRS = GREASER, D/G =DONKEY GREASER, D/MAN =DONKEYMAN, F/GRS = FRIDGE GREASER, M/MAN = MOTOR MAN, WPR= WIPER BUT WAS AMERICAN, ERS= ENGINE ROOM STOREKEEPER. HAVE GOT ALL THESE DISCHARGES EXCEPT FRIDGE GREASER AND FIREMAN WATER TENDER.

Can we have a Glossary of nautical initials then readers could then refer to when in doubt. It would be good, I doubt if any other site would have one.
Just an idea, there are a lot I have never heard of and it would be useful.
