If you want to see some fantastic pictures of Liverpool past and present go to.
intacity.liverpool.
I'm sure you will enjoy them
.
In the 1950/60s I lived in Connahs Quay, North Wales but sailed out of Liverpool.I met my wife in the Lido Prestatyn in 1960 and she was a nurse in Newsham General Hosptal, Belmont Road, Anfield. Long since knocked down now. We visited lots of pubs along the dock road and 'In Town' when we were courting. Happy Days. She used to come on board ships when I was in port working. The best one she liked was the Sarah Bowater in Ellesemer Port, she was treated like royalty.
It will be our Golden Wedding next year, how time flies.

dock road
anyone recall two pubs south of the Pier head called The Devils and The Angels just north of the Queens dock.Used to get dragged out of there to join a British & Continental ship ( the Bittern) on sailing day. Probably long gone now, bit like my powers of recall.

Remember them well. The Devils official name was The Coburg, I think.
The was also The Seven Steps nearby which I assume is well gone.

Liverpool Dock Road.
The Devils ( The Coburg as Bill said) great after hours pub it was far better when you were locked in.When I was ashore we used to jump the number one bus from Seaforth and the driver would drop us off right outside the door.We would get there one hour before normal closing time and stay until whatever time you had decided that you had had enough (if there was such a thing in those days).Arrived one night the place was busted by the police, result two pints and nowhere to go but home what an anti climax. That was the end of the stay behind at the Devils. The manageress said she had been paying the police off but this new Inspector decided that he wanted a Grand a week which she just could not afford.Bent Coppers Ay.
Regards.

I believe the reply was a punch in the face and "Take it out of that like the Japs took it out of Pearl Harbour.

Remember them both well, I was 3rd Mate on the EGRET and the ARDETTA in '63/'64, the old man would send me ashore to find our "lost" crew before sailing, give me a chance of a couple of wets as well!! cheers, Glyn
