The true reason for it closing lads is because it was estimated that it would cost £2,000.000 to keep it maintained and with the introdution of the bus service on the dock road which was much quicker the last trains ran there course on 30 december 1956.From were i am sitting now on my pc i could throw a stone further than seaforth sands station Regards lads Terry. I think the pub you are referring to and the Long Lobby are one of same.It was situated right opposite the Cunard berth at Huskisson and I only knew it by the name Long Lobby as that is what all the scousers off the ships and the dockers called it. Lunch times the place would be heaving and I think it is true to say you could buy anything in there apart from the ale that is.

all you guys are making me home sick about the overhead railway the pubs and birkenhead many a trip i did on the overhead in the old days it was through the railway that i got in contact with jim brady that to my good fortune keep it up guys the stories make my day
hi lads. i nevet rode on the overhead as i only docked in larpool once, when i came home DBS.. but i do remeber it very well from delivering furniture . i have never heard it described as a railway before, always the overhead. was that where scaffold (the group) sang about the aintree iron? alf
I was lucky enough to walk under the "Umbrella", but only briefly, as they started demolition as I commenced my Apprenticeship. Cunard "Medi-boats", or "Brigs", as they were known, docked in Huskisson and Sandon Tidal Basin. I remember partaking of lunch in the Sandon Lion at about 1 shilling a pint. The pub was always jam - packed. What a shame it was not preserved. Great Yarmouth also did away with the main station and railway line which would now cost many millions to replace.
Hi John, Yes sure it was. We all called it Harry Hattons because he run it with his wife whose name eludes me. Harry had sailed with Cunard as a winger in the war and after I believe and was a nice bloke, EDNA was his wife. Remember my wife coming aboard a ship for ffirst time in Husky Dk/ The cunard cargo boats used to shut down the galley in port so no food. I was Chf stwd and entertaining all day port officials,customs office people. By time eveing come beer still flowing and my poor wife said she was starving.. OK told them remaining to b.... off and went ashore. Was going to catch taxi or more likely bus up town to find decent restaraunt but when we got out the dock gate I happened to point out the famous Harry Hattons. Despite me saying it wasnt for ladies my wife insisted we go in. In we go up the "long lobby" to the little snug bar at the back which had just a serving hatch. There were a couple of stevedores in only enjoying there pint. Edna came to the hatch to take our order and I introduced my wife to her. You wou;d have thought she was royalty the fuss Edna made of her. A few minutes later the other two guys had a verbal disagreement and came out with some typical dockside language. Edna was out like a flash and threw them both out saying theres a lady present you b.....s. The guys were so stunned they departed,probably to the front bar, and Edna shoo ed them out.
