Our Library is excellent, during the lock down they suspended any late book fines, you could also ring up and they would put the books you ordered on a table out the front and ring you to pick them up, all neat and packaged.

The seamen of old this way, used several boozers and would lift a bench
seat in the pub and leave books read and take others for the next trip.

It was normal practice and ensured reading material for all.

Don't know if British libraries are the same but they shouldn't be proud if they do the same as this mob out here.

Victoria, in Denmark, there are libraries where you can borrow a person instead of a book to listen to their life story for 30 minutes. The aim is to fight against prejudices. Each person has a title - "unemployed", "refugee", "bipolar", etc. - but by listening to their story, you realise how much you shouldn't "judge a book by its cover". This innovative and brilliant project is active in more than 50 countries. It's called "The Human Library".

I have to say John i enjoyed and had a good laugh at the stats on Brits, For me i find we Brits dont complain enough if we get short changed or a bum deal, I am a pain in the butt when i no i am getting ripped off dont matter who the hell it is or for what amount even if its pennies i wont drop it, I dont know how many times i have heard the old cliche oh it doesn't matter its only pennies. must be in our genes mate. As the old saying goes? Look after your pennies and the pounds look after themselves. Yes I do take the stalks of mushrooms when purchasing at the supermarket same as I will break a garlic bulb to just take a couple of cloves. As was pointed out long ago? If they sell it by weight then you are entitled to take just what you want. Ever notice that they like to package up veg so that you are supposed to get more than you want hence paying more. Not this black duck I break open the package and take what I need.

In the trade, the stalks become soup, add a bit of Stilton, peeps pay good money for it.

With all this eating of exotic vegetables don’t forget that old seaman’s saying , especially when leaving a ship, “ don’t ever leave a bad smell behind “, very hard to do when feeding to such high standards. JS.

Supermarkets nearly double the weight on Broccoli just look at the stalk they leave on the bulk of which you cut off.

Broccoli stalks, clean them up, slice and add to stir fried veg, great stuff.
