Heat Exhaustion / heat stroke
The first if not attended to can lead to the second and as its name applies can lead to heart failure and death. I took over a small survey vessel in Singapore brought there by a uk crew and took over with an Indonesian crew. The new Malaysian owner asked me would I be able to take it on the Australian coast . I said as she stands NO she would at that time have had to be manned by Australians, and to have air conditioning in the accomodation. She had air conditioning in the survey rooms for the care and protection of the delicate computers and survey gear , having spent her life in the North Sea she had got away with not having in the accomodation for her crew. The owner could not afford it at the time , so what was the final career of the vessel I don’t know, her new name thinking back think it was the Teknic Putra her original one I can’t remember . We used to take salt tablets in the old days , but this today is frowned on , as I found out when trying to buy over the counter in a chemist shop , and think you have to have a prescription for today in Australia. The first symptoms are over sweating and dizziness . JS .

Five little children died from the Heat on the GEORGIC in the Red Sea, families taking them to OZ for a better life as £10 Poms. They were sewn up and buried in the Red Sea.
She was a HOT ship , built for the North Atllantic no A/C

Re: Heat Exhaustion / heat stroke
Had to pay off the 2nd engineer on my first trip to sea. This meant we had to call off limits at Durban to medivac him. He was a brilliant guy and fantastic engineer who virtually lived in the engine room. The ship, a crude oil tanker, was only a year old and had an air conditioned control room but he was old style and kept his watch in the engine room either in the workshop or the boiler flat, only using the control room to answer an alarm or the phone. He rarely ate a proper meal and seem to exist on bottles of van de hum liqueur, eventually collapsing in the engine room with heat exhaustion.

Re: Heat Exhaustion / heat stroke
The same problem we had in the fire service, anyone who saw the kit we had to wear the likes used in Salisbury when the poisoning occurred, hot summer day, full protective suit, in BA, and working hard lifting drums of chemicals off the beach. Normal duration of BA set 35 mins, but in those sets 10 min, and changeover , kt

Re: Heat Exhaustion / heat stroke
Here in Melbourne during the cooler months there are many cases of heat exhaustion.
It is common in large shopping centers and is usually with the older generation.
Feeling the cold they over dress and collapse.
There have been a few close calls with some .
But dizzyness and sweating, very common after a Saturday night on the sauce.

They were sort sugar coated so supposed to make them more palatable (enteric coated was the term) , looked like chocolate but that's as far as it went; you had to bite em in half to be effective other wise they just went through you and out the other end. I used to get thro about 6 per watch sometimes 8, depending how hot it was.

Re: Heat Exhaustion / heat stroke
I hated those salt tablets, they made my sick, I used to throw up after swallowing one, I followed the advice of a second cook who used to sip a mug of sea water from the fire hydrant. Funny thing is now I put a lot of salt on everything, my Dr said he would ban salt and sugar, I told him I love salt on my food, he wasn't impressed.

Salt is a flavour enhancer, best as in most things in moderation but,
cutting monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a good thing.

Re: Heat Exhaustion / heat stroke
Too much salt and sugar is not god for you.
Never use either apart from what is in the food I cook.
A doc once told me that if sugar was invented today t would be classified as a poison.
