Re: Personal independence payment and Disability Living Allowance
We are very lucky here with our GP.
Only had to use a few simple forms but he is always willing to assist any patient in filling them in and often adding a note and from what I know all his patients have got what they wanted without and questions asked.

PIP is a totally different affair, GP's here are also though busy, not tying
any one up with red tape etc.
It would be best if knowledge was required of the process, to go through it,
not that this would be wished on anyone.

Re: Personal independence payment and Disability Living Allowance
The P I P payment , John , is a very complex structure design to assist you in personal independence it is also assessed by one of two outside bodies which is either governed by capita or ATOS they're assessor are clinicians but in saying that they are not necessarily the missions with any speciality in what you have
In my case I have a spinal injury and my assessor could be a musculoskeletal physiotherapist which is absolutely no use whatsoever and has very limited knowledge of the neuro physiotherapy that accompanies my condition therefore they are worse than useles
The GP is also a very broad brush approach a local GP practice has approximately 1 GP to 4000 patients so when you come to filling in a complex form about the complex nature of your problem the GP is not the right person to do it you need to refer the assessor to your consultant whether it be a spinal neurosurgeon or a stroke consultant or in some cases a cardiothoracic consultant you need that level of detail to convey your condition to the assessor
I used my neurosurgeon consultant as a reference on the form and basically had very little problem because he detailed a condition to which the assessor was probably not familiar and at the end of the day he is less likely as a specialist to get argument from the non specialist assessor
So whilst the GP is a great help in these things it is the wrong direction to take when it comes to filling in the P I P form you also need to take advice from a level probably higher than the Citizens Advice Bureau in my case I took advice from the spinal injuries Association SIA find there are people in all these types of association like the stroke Association who are very familiar with these forms and are really a great help in filling them in it is the sort of thing that only a complete idiot does on their own

Re: Personal independence payment and Disability Living Allowance
Rob, I imagine you are getting the best treatment available, or at least hope so.
But comparing the UK system with ours here in Oz, based on reports from family and friends in UK our system is far more user friendly than that of the UK.
Waiting times here appear to be lower and ease of seeing a specialist is better here.
But I fully understand your population problems must put untold strain on the system, but even like you there are some parts of Oz, mainly bush regions, where there is still a GP shortage.

There was a benefit in the UK which is still in existence called the disability living allowance DLA I know an awful lot of people who are on DLA and could successfully walk well over 100 yards with a walking stick a new system came in a few years ago called the personal independence payment and when that came in they tightened up on the rules and in doing so an awful lot of people who had had the independence payment got thrown out of the system a lot of these quite a high percentage have a peeled and had their benefit reinstated but everybody that I've come across that is genuinely in need of the personal independence payment seems to have got it
One of the problems in the UK is the system is overloaded my local doctors surgery has 30000 patients and the 10 doctors consist of partners as well as employed doctors and registrar's the day of going to the surgery when the doctor actually knew who you were is a thing of the past
You have to be fully awake and fully aware of how the system works and then you will receive what you're entitled to the assessments for some of these payments are done by outside contractors . The assessors are supposedly all clinicians and it is strongly rumoured that there is bonus payments to get people off benefit but I've never actually seen evidence that this is true
What are the huge problems that people perceive is when you see somebody with their brand new mobility car some very nice cars for quite tiny upfront payments I drive a 4 x 4 Suzuki Vitara which for the 3 years of the lease cost me an advance payment of £600 largely because I needed the automatic and some adaptations and I get there on my walking frame but it's when you see people pull up in a disabled parking bay and run into the shop where they're the only person in the car and the badge in the window refers to them you start to wonder how you had to struggle to get your blue badge and to get your payment unfortunately there are some very good actors out there and they give the genuine people a bad name
There is still a huge amount of abuse out there Rob, but there are some disabilities which are not obvious to the eye.
Re: Personal independence payment and Disability Living Allowance
Rob, It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of this month and the new tax year kicks in. Its estimated by the D.W.P. Themselves that a ruling on claimant coming off incapacity benefit onto ESA Contribution based with mental health problems missed out on some supplementary or additional benefits Which Ester McVey had no choice but to reinstate and backdate payments to Mental health patients. These back dated payments go back as far as 2011 to the present date. The payments will range from between £5.000 to £20.000 +, And the last number I read was over 80.000 claimant's. I know a couple of people who received the claim form they never asked for it, it, was sent automatically as the D W P Found the people who where victims of there error them selves. And I also know a lot of them have been asked to give the government until the end of March this year before expecting any backpay due to them. That's all very well and good if all these claimant's live that long as some of these forms where sent out going back as far as last November, I also note on the government website that they will give a claimant who lets say receives £25.000 backpay 12 months to get it down below what the level of savings are to enable them to carry on getting there benefits, In other words spend it until its down to below the thresh hold within 12 months, And keep every receipt that you spend every pound on as proof. M.P.s have just had a nice result I don't here of any of them waiting or being told to spend it within a given time. What if someone with Mental health issues wants to invest this money that is not {INCOME} Rather an entitlement that they should have been paid years ago. And weren't because of misgivings by the D.W.P. Themselves. I am going to watch this one very closely, Regards and good health to all the lads Terry.
Re: Personal independence payment and Disability Living Allowance
Rob, the misuse of Disabled parking is rife in so many ways.
We have many here who have one for reasons not always visable, but misused by family members.
The law says the person for whom it has been issued must be in the car when parked in a disabled spot. So many times this is abused.
But thankfully the local parking inspectors are allowed to check the validity of all such permits and report out of dates. So many do not remove them even though the person for whom they were issued no longer needs them for what ever reason.
We now have a National Disability Insurance Scheme for those with serious disabilities.
It has to be managed by a suitable company, problem is they can take up to 20% off monies allocated in administration fees.

I believe you are correct. At one time you could use it without if you were on business for the card holder e.g. I used to collect oxygen cylinder for a neighbour who was bedridden, and even humping it over the footpath was a trial. Now you cant do that. I was parked on double lines outside a hospital recently and was approached by parking warden who asked to see the picture on the back. All this current law is down to abuse by others and also theft of cards.
