Well Brian,
I thought by now that some of the engineers on site would have been able to explain to you what it was, how it was mixed and how it was applied to steam pipes etc.

Was good one Fouro, engine room was always a place of mystery to me, the door in the passageway would open, a lot of noise would emanate, and a guy in greasy overalls would appear. Had to resort to google, kt

Here in Melbourne two hospitals built back in the 40's and 50's have been pulled down and they were full of it. Cheaper to do this and build ne than to correct it.

There is a lot of misconception about asbestos in buildings, if it is managed correctly there is absolutely no danger.
The danger comes when the asbestos panelling or lagging is disturbed then fibres are released,these then have the potential to cause harm man years down the line.
Asbestos is or was used as filler in many products in times gone by.
How many of you have chewed the cap of a bic biro pen? Asbestos was present in plastic and was used to give the item strength.
The same with lino, asbestos again was used to give the material strength.
There is/was a lot of hysteria about asbestos, I am not saying it is not dangerous, but used correctly is reasonably safe.
