    Default Nursing homes

Not sure about the UK situation but here in Oz many, if not all, nursing homes get a bad rap.

Short staffed, poor wages all the fault of the gov many say.

Having spent over six years in the industry I know a fair bit about the problems.

What many fail to understand is that they area business and as such need to make a profit.

To reach this end there are a number of things they do within the law.

Staff levels are at the bare minimum required by law.
Wages are the at the lowest legal level, which in most instances is the award rate now about $22.40 per hour.

The situation is often compounded by the fact many staff are from non English speaking backgrounds so communication with some older clients can be an issue.

We have a friend in such a place in Adelaide, there over two years with severe dementia and his wife was told when he went in there he would not last a year.

The costs to relatives in such places is often based on wealth and pension.
Homes are allowed to take up to 80% of the clients pension on top of other fees,

Food is kept to the bare legal minimum just enough to sustain life.
Charges for outings for all clients fit to go or not, this is how they make their profits.

Govs make the regulations under which they must operate, but the owners know how to work the system to their benefit, only go into one as a very last resort is my advice.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    John.
Wasn't it an Italian in Melbourne who sold his old peoples homes after making a fortune, took around $60 million and fled to Italy? In order to take that much money out of the country he would have to go through the Treasury, easy peasy.

Normally you can’t take more than $10,000 out of Australia in cash. However you can use credit cards when abroad , if drawing cash out of a machine you are restricted to the amount of what the citizens of that country are. I would of thought $60 million dollars would have taken some getting out if the government was doing its job properly. Too many big businesses apparently use Australia as a milk cow.Foreigners seem to get special treatment its about time it was made a more equal playground for the natives. We are deluged with tv programs about our borders being guarded and ordinary travellers being fined for smuggling cigarettes , or food of not passable health standards $60 million now that would certainly be more entertaining to watch and how he earned and carried down his trouser legs through customs and emigration. Cheers JS .

It has ben going on for years.
They buy shares in international companies then sell them overseas.
A quite legal way of moving illegal amounts out of the country.

Our PM Morrison has caught Covid, and apparently passed it on to some, he is now in isolation, one thing, we will have our programme Tipping Point clear of his intrusion for a couple of weeks.

There is now call for a nurse to be on duty 24/7 in nursing homes.
the current law says they must be there for at least 16 hours a day, very few are.

There was a home owned and run by the Greek Orthodox Church here in Melbourne.
The virus hit and it had the biggest single place death toll in the state.
When the authorities investigated it was a shock for all the conditions of the home and the clients.
    It had to be closed.
But what many could not understand is why family members never brought the situation to the authorities.

But one other point which shows the rate of corruption in state govs.

Federal gov allocate a certain amount of money to each state for the number of beds in each.
But the states health body has to administrate it, not federal'

There should be an accreditation on each home every two years, done by state body.
In the 6.5 years I worked in one we had only one such, little wonder the industry is in such a mess.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
