Re: Sometimes things can surprise you
The immigrants that came here in the 1950s and 1960s all worked hard had two jobs pooled their money to buy their house . Then bought another one and we're proud to be considered British so what's gone along along the way to get us to the current situation I don't really understand

Re: Sometimes things can surprise you
I have many good friends the other side of the pond especially in the Rural parts of the USA having spent several weeks with friends during the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Parkway America away from the main towns I actually find a wonderful country to visit . I find the cities very crowding but I find out with London and Birmingham . I love the sense of friendship and the idea that Britain is about to miles long back to Miles wide I was in Virginia in a real backwater town called Vesuvius having driven 30 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway to find petrol and something to eat I had decided to drive the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway and absolutely fantastic beautiful drive . I stopped an Ask local if they were somewhere I can get gasoline and breakfast He Stopped mowing his lawn got his car at the garage and Beckenham me to follow him we drove on about 10 miles and it took me into gerties cafe petrol station and general store . I had a fantastic breakfast . Very salty Virginia ham and beautiful fresh eggs sat on top of it sunny side up . The owner asked where I lived and I said about 70 miles south of London she nodded and said her daughter was in London studying she was at University College and I ever met her I just love that naive country way that thinks that we're all a very small village it's really very touching but the heart felt warmth that you get from the local people is fantastic they really go out of their way to help you

Re: Sometimes things can surprise you
Sorry but having worked as a scaffolder for many years ,visiting all kinds of areas ,knocking on all sorts of doors with council officials, sorting out the jobs on many council properties, its not only whites who live at no 21 tip lane trailer park next to the benefits office, its all sorts of people from all backgrounds and a lot of them are skilled in getting what they like from the councils. As well as the benefit money as well.

Re: Sometimes things can surprise you
I gave up judging people a long time ago you can take race religion background upbringing and you can never predict where they're going to I know people from the roughest of circumstances that have got degrees and Grear jobs and I know people in the best of circumstances who have turned out to be real people that you don't want to meet . I think locked in all of us is a desire to get on and rise up or the opposite to sit down and deteriorate . I've long given up looking for what triggers it but a lot of it to me seems to be triggered by a desire to have an easy life young people especially see on television the celebrity Status where they have made it because of an ability to sing or dance or whatever on real time TV you can tell these kids that one in a million might make it but they expect that they can be that one and it'll be gone in a flash even if they do make it . I sometimes wonder if our parents desire to see their kids do well pushed us harder . But I noticed when my son was going through College some 30 years ago now a lot of the lecturers were talking Anarchy and easy life and I think the whole lot starting with the education system could do with a great big dose of Senna pods and starting again

Re: Sometimes things can surprise you
To be honest, I never knew the old Tiger Bay (Cardiff) In my time it was called Butetown or the Docks.
Now Cardiff Bay.
It was more likely easier to name absent Nationalities then.
Some lovely people.
Good and bad in all, everywhere in reality.
Keith.
Tiger Bay - Cardiff's dockland district - is Wales' oldest multi-ethnic community. Sailors and workers from over 50 countries settled here. BBC Wales - History - Themes - Tiger Bay

Re: Sometimes things can surprise you
Gulliver, it is not just the British who would rather see the migrant work while they stand and supervise.
Here in Oz the migrants all do well as they are prepared to do the jobs other locals do not want.
We came here in 1980 ad did very well because we were prepared to do what ever it took.
The locals are great and very welcoming but at times too laid back and many never reach their potential because of this.

Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

Hi to my old 'Sarfend' townie!
Good to see you posting again,Rodders. I know I don't have to explain to you why the U.S. isn't exactly 'flavour of the month' these days, but I shouldn't worry too much, mate. At the present time the American people are saddled with a leader who appears to have a warped perception of truth and moral decency which, unfortunately, does not reflect well upon the American people. However, I'm sure that once he is removed from office (and, for whatever reason, I think he will be) favourable regard for America and it's people will blossom once again.
Anyway, I digress. May main reason for posting, Rod, was to endorse your appreciation of this thread. With an uncommon lack of sarcasm and a great deal of sincerity I'd like to congratulate all who have contributed thus far. How refreshing to see my fellow shipmates singing from the same song-book for a change. Who said we can't be civil when we try? Greater interest and reading pleasure for all, Thankyou!
.....Roger
