Superstition

Brian, on ALL the ships i was on , the food was good, the only complaint mostly i recall was if the 2nd cook could not make decent bread, mind you if he was good, his reward was we ate twice as much of it. Honestly i had good food, i was fed very well at home, mum was a cook for the big house, (we were in a tied cottage), and a very good cook, but it was all about money i suppose, kt

i don't ever remember steak on a Clan ;Line menu , they were introducing a grill , select night before , for defrosting , menu in the early 1970s

i was on 3 ellerman papayani boats, 3 Mc andrews boats, i know some members on here were also on that company, early 60s, be interesting what they remember, or is it my rose coloured glasses again ??, but my memory is of good food, or maybe i was just a gannet !!!kt

But I really did sail on some bum feeders. in the early days. One ship. `NICHOLAS K`., ]KYRIAKIDES of Athens] the Captain, Mate and Chief Engineer skinned out in Ozzy as it was so bad.
On the Fyffes Banana boats all we had was Bananas, fried Bananas, stewed Bananas, Roast bananas, boiled Bananas, Grilled bananas, We were going bananas,
When I kicked to the Captain, `Mighty` Joe Young because the Irish stew was made of Bananas, He thumped me in the face and sent me falling down the ladder.

But apart from that not a bad job.

PS I was on the EGYPTIAN of Papayannis, in 1953, and then on the VALDIVIA and another one of MacAndrews. all good jobs and a good run. all I remember was plenty of wine. all day and every day.

The very very Best was ESSO, Fed better than every hotel I have ever been in, and bottles of wine on every table in the Mess every Wednesday and Sunday.
An excellent company to work for. Plenty of money and plenty of good food and good accommodation.

Hi Brian, i was also on the Egyptian, but 5 years after you were on her, Aug 58, in those days they had plenty of ships of course, also on the Andalusian, and the Lancastrian, . i never doubted what you said about bum feeders, i heard other guys at sea talk about different ships, i just lead a charmed life, HE always looks after the righteous !!!, lol, kt

Seem to remember Blue Flu were not great feeders.I remember once I asked for two fried eggs at breakfast, cook cut one egg in two. The Chinese ate better than we did, but the Chinese No4 on the 8/12 with me used to go and get the J/eng and me a good fed.

Hi Keith you were at sea long before me but it was always fish and chips at dinner time or lunch on Fridays. Steak and chips Saturday tea time. Running down the West Coast curry and rice for breakfast if you wanted a change from bacon and eggs.

Clan line best breakfast was at 6 a.m. which was a stuffed paratha stuffed with a curry paste
The breakfast was one egg even if you order an omelette

Maybe Clan Line had share's in Weight watchers.

If thirteen is so unlucky, how come the bakers dozen was one more never under stood that one, something for nothing?
