    Default Ab and competent crew

in a recent discussion between an old time AB on merchant ships and an avid sailor on yachts the discussion came up of who was more capable on deck the AB or the RYA registered COMPETENT CREW MEMBER my view as a mediator was the two jobs were entirely different .....but each was a competent seaman on the deck of his vessel.....bothhad certificates that gave them a degree of seamanship qualifications that qualified there position .....anyone on the site who has both tickets please could they give there views as the two almost combatants are daggers drawn........regards cappy in the middle

Just tell them cappy one is a working and professional seaman, the other does it for pleasure and considered an amateur when it comes to having to provide for family out of his take home pay. Cheers JS

#4.... Shipbuilders not seamen. I had a small half cabin cruiser at one time and had to produce a skippers ticket to be able to use. Went to the relevant department and asked about getting. Was going to cost me about 500 dollars to do the course and get this piece of buerocratic bumf. I asked them who was going to examine me and when I didn't agree with the examiner as said he wasn't qualified in my eyes as said I was a professional seaman. Whereupon he asked for 5 dollars for the paperwork, and away I went. Think any professional seaman would of received the same treatment. That is the difference to a professional seaman and an amateur. Yet I agree with the fact that prior to this WA law coming out, boat owners had been sailing for 20 and 30 years without this piece of paper, makes one wonder if not just a money maker for whatever council you come under. That's just to cover the bald patch at the back. They tell me he flies a pair of your underpants, as lost the Blue Peter when the show closed down all those years ago. Hope he had them dhobied when you gave them to him or nobody will be coming back and just stay in the pub. A sailing we will go, preferably on Tynemouth boating lake is only a couple of feet deep. Cheers JS
