John, here in Devon yes we do call visitors grokels, but we don't wear T-Shirts saying 'Go Home Grokels' (have never seen any personally), because we welcome them, our towns and villages well being relies upon them and we are even building new roads so that they get here even easier and hopefully in increasing numbers, private enterprise is building new hotels and expanding current ones. We don't have many industries in this area, but we do have high technology centres exporting sophisticated equipment around the world, high production market garden produce, a vibrant fishing industry, which would be better if the French and Spanish were not given our quotas by the EU. Yes the grokels are welcomed by the locals they keep us going during the summer (and beyond) so that we can survive the sparse winter months, but even these traditionally slow months are starting to pick up with increased facilities being offered. This part of the country is well visited by French/Dutch/German/Japanese and films like 'War Horse' have made people aware that it is a nice part of the country with good food and local produce. All I ask is please don't sit in my deckchair!!
