Default There was an old woman who lived in a shoe !!

Many will think you are joking Brian, some of us know better, remember the snow and subsequent floods of 1947 very well. Living on the Yorkshire Dales at the time, we discovered our small hamlet was on a hill, hadn't really thought about it before until we were surrounded for miles by water in every direction. Our local shop and coalman were supplied by ex army DUWK, I think the army were still operating them then. Our (sister and self) school was seven miles away so they took us three miles by DUWK and we walked the rest and they picked us up at the same spot late afternoon, mother wasn't going to let us get away with no schooling, not on yer life, also the words ringing in our ears " and don't forget to collect any pieces of coal that may be laying in the DUWK" . Our little condemned cottage had no gas, electric, water or sanitation services. First time I was able to switch on a light or see hotwater coming from a tap in a house in which I lived I was twelve years old, prior to that it was paraffin lamps and kettles on the fire and a acid battery radio, favourite programme with Snowy, Jock and the boss Dan Dare ...................................hmmm memories

I told a little white lie in the above, Ivan,
I didnt have a snot rag, I didnt want anyone thinking I was deprived. I always used my sleeve.
. It is a Completely True Story tho`.
After the men at the Gas Works shovelled the coke into a big sack almost as big as me, I then shoved this old pram with buckled wheels, two miles up hill to home in snow. I went there every week taking a day off school,
But 1947 was one of the worst winters.
The ones I remember were 1942 and 1947 and 1963. as the worst winters in my memory.
    Cheers
    Brian.

I am sat in my `office` up stairs and looking at the falling snow through my window , I see `****` galloping up and down the avenue throwing snowballs with his children.
    I wonder if falling snow cures a `Bad Back`.???
No good joining in, he will not speak to me since I told him my name was Sahib.
    Cheers
    Brian.

He tells me some of the older folks who cannot afford the cost of heating are having to resort to huddling up in blankets all day to keep warm.
This is 2013 not 1813, would have expected people to be treated that way then. If what he tells me is only half true then some of the older population are doing it very tough.
I hope all of you living there are OK.
Huddling up all day all day in blankets to keep warm seems to me abit over the top,the average Brit has not come to that stage yet, having said that the people in power now are squeezing the British Public for every penny they can get, prices in shops and supermarkets going up every week,it is about time the producers took a bit of the weight.

Ah well there you have it Brian, it was seeing those shiny stripes on your sleeve gave you the ambition to get the gold ones !, so look on the bright side it was a bonus not having a snot rag

Obviously **** is getting much needed exercise, wil he now be fit enough to look for work, or is that considered to be a four letter word in his language????
    Happy daze John in Oz.
