I recall doing a lifeboat drill at sea while at anchor, I was wearing a signet ring my Mother had gave me as we hoisted the lifeboat back aboard i was left in the boat to hook her up on to the falls, My signet ring got caught in the hook and nearly ripped my finger off. Robin if you wanted to emigrate to Australia it would be better if you came in on a so called refugee boat. Otherwise you wont receive anything and would probably be put on the first plane out. It is not a question of being a bigot but of common sense, something in rare quantities these days. For the reasons of 'elf and safety I can fully undestand the need for some jewlery to be removed while in the work place. As food services manager I would not allow any of my staff to wear any form of jewlery, except wedding rings, whilst food handling. If the staff memebr was wearing a religeous artifact such as a cross then they had to make sure it was secure and could not be seen whilst working.
But the situation has now got out of hand, Female Moslems can now request a private room to do banking so they can wear the full burqua, that is reverse discrimination. Recently in Fiji, in some places we had to cover our arms, take off hats and sunglasses to comply with local customs. I had no problem with that, I was a guest in thta country and so it was correct I comply with local customs.
Sadly now in many westen countries the local born have to bow to the demands of the incoming minority. There is definitely something rotten in the state of Denmark!!!!!!
Ted, Dont know where he found that one in any BOT regulation. Must have made it up on the spot. Dont think the Health and Safety would have been around in those good and wonderful years, stupid regulations and do gooders free. Regards John Sabourn.

We have a Scandinavian friend whose wife is an Aus, his two children were born in HK but have Aus passports-citizenship, he however can only now get a one year visitors visa, go figure. We have said jokingly we will give him mine but can you imagine the uproar if that was raised (: worth it just to see the reaction. Oh he said when at immigration dept trying to sort this out he is always interviewed by an Indian or some form of ****** in full kit. Yer gotta laugh!
I might be well out of touch with Aus but from my memories with a few exceptions, mainly the Arabs, those who emigrated or arrived by other means, i.e. refugees started with nothing & contributed significantly to the country? Aus would be a sad - dull place without them. It is only since this PC crap has come in & so many of the parties in parliament-the departments handling this sector that it has gone so wrong. We vote them, the pollies in we get what we deserve. We never seem to recall they things they legislate apropos emigration-refugees lwhen the election comes around again. Look at the current gov't, they shut down the off shore refugee camps as inhumane only to reverse that decision at one would think significant cost. Richard

Hi Ted, when I was a lad in 1952 I was always told by other ABs never to wear rings on deck. Many a seaman has lost his finger when a wire running through his hands had a jag in it that would catch on the ring and rip his finger off.
I have never ever wore a ring, I love my fingers.

John, I have to admit that here in Argentina EVERYONE (even illegals) get free medical treatment, and it is of an extremely high quality. I had 2 visits to the public hospital and could not fault the treatment. The queues were horrendous, but so what? Where we live the population is around 600 people scattered over an area of 100 sq kilometers (about 40 square miles). We have a health centre with free GP, free obstetrician, free pediatrician and free dentist. They are only there in the morning. But we have a full time nurse for minor injuries.Quote:

Keep on at your politicians, John. Here, deep in the country, it is quite refreshing as everyone is of either South American Indian origin or European settler origin or a mixture of the two.
Our current president keeps toying with the idea of limiting the purchase of land and property by foreigners who are not permanent residents - something the UK might like to consider?
Boltonistan has not (yet) reached us, but I have to admit I would love a decent curry one day :rolleyes: or a greasy kebab and chips with extra chilli sauce :sick:
