Was KECKS (trousers) just a Liverpool saying.We would say his kecks were at half mast when someones trouser were to small and they were halfway up his leg.How about "He's got a head on him like a Portugese lodging house cat" why Portugese I wonder.What is a GALOOT often said by my mother and people where I lived "You Stupid Galoot".

Guess your mum watched a lot of 'Westerns' Jim as that word featured in many.
Also 'kecks' was also used in Yorkshire for panties as well as trousers, as girls used to say 'bet she's had her kecks around her ankles again' aaah! memories
Yes Ivan I knew that kecks also refered to ladies panties but being a good living boy I did'nt wish to use it in that context.I've heard it said on many occassion "I had a few pints last night and got home and ripped the kecks off the queer one"meaning the wife.

This could be counted as a quiz question but it was a well known saying in my time in Liverpool.If something was not going to happen,say you had no chance of getting money back from somebody that you had lent it to (is that scouse for giving someone a loan) it was said "You will get that back when Donnelly docks" in other words you had no chance of getting it back.Who or what was Donnelly,Capt Kong will be interested in this one and in fact he may know or should know the answer that is if the folklore is correct.Now this may start some argument!!!

The church is linked to the famous phrase, "I'll be waiting till Dick docks", meaning "I'll be waiting a long time". This refers to the ship the Richard Donnelly, which is said to have sunk in Liverpool Bay. Another version of this phrase is used when an unlikely promise is made; "I'll repay that loan soon!" "Oh,yes - when Donnelly docks!" implying that the action is never going to happen. A gilded copper weather vane in the form of the ship is on top of the tower of St Nicholas'. The weather vane measures 4 ft 4 (1.3m).
The vane probably survived the fall of the tower in 1811. It was renovated before re-erection; the sails are dated 1815. Historic photos show ships as weather vanes on the Bluecoat Hospital and one of the Goree warehouses. The vane was added to the church in 1746 when the spire was built on the tower. The illustration in Enfield's History of Liverpool 1773 clearly shows the ship.
Despite the traditions, no record of a Liverpool ship named Donnely or Richard Donnelly has been found. recorded. This has been confirmed by Mr Tibble, Director of the Liverpool Maritime Museum. Unfortunately for local mythology, there is some serious misunderstanding about the weather vane. The facts are as supplied by David Bazendale - the Rector's Adviser on Parish History.
