Hello everyone,
I served in the Merchant Navy (Catering) from 1951 -1959, I was trained aboad the Vindicatrick about March 1951. Following are the names of some of the ships I sailed on; mv Red Bank (T2 tanker),Essso Plymouth,Capetown Casle, Rangitoto (NZ Shipping Line) Empire Ken, Edinburgh Castle,Winchester Castle,QueenElizabeth, New Australia,mv Golfito. The are other tankers I cannot remember their names except they were BP and Esso. I was always called Spud. I left the MN in Nov.1959. I then was called up for National Service in 1960 and served in the RAMC untill 1968.I continued my nursing carear in Inverness this is where my wife came from (we were married in Germany) I worked mainly with children with learning difficulties in hospital and in the community. I retired in 1994. I have two daughters, four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, my wife passed away in April of this year we were married for 43 years. I miss her terribly. I am now 72 years of age but still remember my Merch days with great fondness Going to sea is a great educator. I now live in Thurso in the North of Scotland and hope to spend my remaining days fishing and looking out to sea.

Your writeup was a good one and gives a good insight as to what you have been!
So sorry to hear about the passing of your dear Wife in April mate,it must be a terrible blow after that lenghth of time! (I am going on for my 41st year)
But time they say heals all ,and i suppose we must accept all these things in life,but for certain Spud mate i know that she will never be forgotten, God Bless!
My Grandad was also born in Inverness Scotland!

Yes the Mechant navy days too will remain with us all forever,it was something special in those days and like all here we are really proud to have served!

You take care now Spud and do drop in here as often as you can,it helps a lot to in more ways than one!

Hi Tony.
I see that we were at sea around the same time,but only sailed on one
ship,the Edinburgh Castle.I sailed on her from24/155 until 11/3/55,just
the one trip.I also sailed on tankers,mainly British Tankers,out from Swansea.
Your living in a nice part of the world for sea fishing.Im into seafishing myself
and Ive fished out from Thurso a few times,the last time was some years ago,
it was the European Federation of Sea Anglers European Championships,had
a wonderful time.Cant remember the name of the street,but I stayed with a
Mrs.Murrey,in a row of houses facing the sea,I think they were Council Houses.
