sts SULACO (GBRU)
Hi,
I was on "Sulaco" for many trips from 1961-64 and eventually took her to be scrapped, originally we were surposed to go to Formosa, now Taiwan, but was changed to Bruges, Belgium - a sad day. She was a beautiful old girl & my favourite ship.
Sailing with Capt Purvess & Capt Morris. Would like to here from anyone who sailed on her at this time.

Scrapheap! What a shame!
Hi Graham
Kinow what you mean about it being a sad Day when she was to go to the Scrapyard mate!
Especially when you had been with her for quite some time!
I was only on the old Dunnottar Castle for her last Vouage to (although she never went to the Scrapheap just then, sold to Italians) but just the tought of her not being the old Dunnottar was enough!
You mention Formosa, (Taiwan) which just brings a memory of my late Brother to mind,as he went to Formosa on one of the old Freighters (owned by Formosa) name eludes me,but that one went to the Breakers ,i recall seeing my Brother off at Cape Town and was a bit concerned as all the Crew were Formosan (or whatever they are called!
Cheers
Is this the Ship in question! She is a good looking one !

My mate Ted, who we have been together since schoolboys, Sailed as Passenger on the Britannic to New York to pick up the Salaco, she was under the US Flag then, they loaded bananas in Jamaica then arrived in London, Fyffes then took out the ice water machine and the fridge out of the sailors messroom.
Ted is now dying with leukemia.

Hi Graham.Fred Hartry was 2nd lec on her from 15-11-58 till 07-59. he was promoted to 1st elec and was there untill sometime around 05-63. He was then on one of the Hill boats either Boxhill or Leithill, then the "T" class. At this time frame I was on Camito, Matina, Telde, Revenazon. I also stood by Pacure and Manistee at some point. Then 12yrs on N. Atlantic to Easton Seaboard and Great Lakes run. I would do it all again if the chance were there. Best Regards A.J.Mc

Hi Graham, you won,t remember me on the Sulaco, ex.Talamanca in 1961, I was D.B.S. adrift in Jamaica for three months after leaving the Athelcrest in kingston for a short spell in hospital. I spent all that time boarding U K ships trying to get back home, and finally after talking to the Sulaco,s skipper I got to sign on as Q.M. joining her in Montego Bay, she reminded me of a large private yacht. eventually docking in Southampton.
