Hi Glan,

Thanks for letting me know that you got a copy of the book. You certainly seem to have read it very quickly, and must have been amazed to find that you were mentioned, and even had a picture in there.

If you get hold of Phil, say hi for me. He won't remember me but I was a guest on the bridge of Sunbird on 3rd June 1999, as we sailed out of Grand Harbour in Malta. It was the first voyage of the ship after becoming Sunbird.

I have done nearly 20 cruises now, and I think he was one of the friendliest Captains I have encountered.

You will need to book a cruise with Saga now, and catch up on the old days with him.

I am so pleased not to be at sea these days! there's no 'real' ships left, I doubt if the noon sights are taken anymore (assuming the officer of the watch knows how to use a sextant), as for these 'boxes' called cruise ships..... well that's my Victor Meldrew moment over for another day!

But who can blame us...you know,any of today's crew looking here at us lot must think "God,those guys must have sailed on the Ark!"...or think to themselves.."What's an Officer of the Watch?"

Hi shipmates, My son was a guest on board a passenger ship in Southampton last weekend,As an ex seaman who bunkerd most of the liners', I wanted to know all about it,He said its just a floating hotel ,and he would not give up his golf game to go again.:eek::eek:

Gulliver mate I think all of todays ships have G.P.S. to replace the sextant. as for offcier of the watch, you only get one of them now when you retire, usualy a gold one.:eek:

Hi Seafarer1, Thank you for information,But to me thats a new ship , 1998 years after my time at sea,I was on Esso many years ago doing Bunkers from fawley to Southamptonon all the big ships The Q.E2 maiden voyage all the P&O the ones that when To Australia with the ten pound poms,and many more . My family all have merchant navy roots, both sides' I still have a keen intress in all things Merchant navy. { But not my Children} :eek:
