Death of Ogilvie/John Will Cagliari 1854

Hello there, i'm pleased to have found this site.

Does anyone if there is a register of Merchant Navy deaths abroad for mid 19C?

My ancestor Ogilvie aka "John" Will died at Cagliari, Sardinia on 22/10/1854, whilst on board the "Rose" a ship registered at Sunderland. He was a Master Mariner Cert. No. 54.326 born in Peterhead in 1817 and had been 23 years in the Merchant Service - Coasting and Foreign Trades.

I sure would like to know the circumstances of his death.

Hi Peter, & Mariam. Have just had a quick search before shutting down. Crews Lists Index Project. James Will born Peterhead 1815. Mates certificate # 68232 ticket #25370 London 14/5/51.
Not sure how to check rest of it, but death recorded as drowning.

You may very well find more detail in the ship's crew agreement which ought to be within this document: Port of Registry: Sunderland Ship's Name: RH-RZ | The National Archives
It's not downloadable, so it means a personal visit (recommended) or pay someone or the staff at the archives to search and copy for you if they can find it.

Peter & Marian. Another quick search. ABERDEEN JOURNAL Wed. Nov. 1st 1854. deaths.
Of cholera, on passage from ALEXANDRIA on 22nd Oct., and interred on the island of SARDINIA Mr Ogilvie Will mate of the barque Rose of SUNDERLAND, eldest son of Mr Charles Will, Washing House, PETERHEAD, aged 37 years.

Unfortunately censuses only started in Scotland on 1st January 1855. So they won't help either.

I was thrilled to read your post about the Aberdeen Journal story about Ogilvie Will (my great x 2 grandfather). So far I have been unable to find the original story online. Can you provide a link to that story, or send me a screenshot of it? It's just the sort of confirmation document that I have been searching for for some time.

#8.. Bill if you have access to the Aberdeen papers of so long ago do you have access to the Aberdeen Press And Journal for about November/ December 1988 ? Where the headlines at the time was skipper did not check ship before he sailed. I wish I had kept a copy at the time but was that incensed at the time by the total way it was taken out of context that I would have cheerfully consigned the whole establishment to the deep. If I remember it was the headlines that particular day.? JS

Im guessing at the time re months Marian as was the day after I had been at the enquiry and the headline was as said Skipper did not check ship before he sailed and refers to me whether they put my name there or not can’t remember , that is if they had the balls to do so. If you put what it says on here will soon tell you If is the one I’m referring to or not. Thanks for taking the time to look . There was only one ship employed picking up survivors close in , any others are reporters daydreams. I was home on leave at the time and think I may of been master on the Sandhaven or the Burnhaven and the enquiry wasn’t too far on closing and was the first and only time I was called for a total of about 6 minutes , so wasn’t strenuous cross examination. Lord Cullen cut most of it down and said you are free to go so I went . After following the mediocre press of the Enquiry I insisted. On Numast supplying a solicitor , this might have frightened some off. I would still have the media’s guts for garters giving half the chance , and they know it or maybe they are too stupid and think otherwise . Cheers JS .
