Re: 23rd April
England shares St George: With Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Ethiopia and Catalonia among others as their patron saint and many of these places have their own celebrations and ceremonies in his honour.

Re: 23rd April
Venice and Genoa are two ports in Italy. Whilst the others are countries and provinces . Is there any reason for the differences ? JS

Re: 23rd April
Yes I knew that Keith , but there must be a more complete story why two seaports have a different patron Saint. I never knew the first statement although been to both ports during my working days. Cheers JS

Re: 23rd April
Despite this early strong devotion to St. George in Rome, the cult of the Saint developed still more strongly in other Italian cities and City-states in later centuries. From the fragments of the Western part of the Roman Empire many powerful City-States emerged in the Italian peninsula in the Middle Ages. Among the most powerful were the three great maritime City-States of Genoa, Venice and Pisa. St. George was the declared patron saint of one of these, the Republic of Genoa, which later became known as The Republic of St. George. He was one of the major patron saints of the equally powerful Republic of Venice.

Re: 23rd April
For some unknown reason St George day in UK has never been a day of celebration unlike the Irish all over the world who celebrate March 17th.
April 23 is also Shakespear's birthday he also is reputed to have died on the same date.

Happy daze John in Oz.

#7: That right, as for St George he was canonised in AD 494.
A feast day of St George has been celebrated in England for
hundreds of years on 23 April, which was possibly the date
of his martyrdom. Following the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

We cannot celebrate, we get arrested for being xenophobic/homophobic and any other phobic, it's against the law to be proud of England. As Maureen Lipman used to say 'ooh! he's got an ology' now it's a phobia
But in secret we drink our glass of apple juice, or mead, and pray that that foreigner St George protects us from the Welsh, Irish and Scottish dragons
