Cant really recall that John, but must have mate , so possibly i too then was mistaken!
As all i do recall is the Gold was only Shipped from Cape Town, as the Gold Bullion Train only went there!
But again John i do stand corrected!
Wish i could find a Pic of that somewhere!
Cheers
Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
Well well, my Hat has been eaten John, as i have found a wee bit of evidence of that Gold being loaded at Durban, also i see that Vic a while ago said he knew of that as well, when on the SA Vaal.
So my sincere apologies mate!
I just could not recall this !
But the proof is in the Pudding as said!
However as said Cape Town was the main Port for the Gold to be Loaded of that i know! LOL
Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
On the Vaal in 1970 we always loaded the gold in Durban.
Armed guards surrounded the ship, with guards on board the train, all other loading. / Unloading activity ceased. Guards were also stationed outside the ships bullion room.
Loading gold was an afternoon activity.
Vic
It is in Durban that gold bullion would be loaded just prior to departure. It always amused me to see the high level of security that was put in place when loading the bullion. Armed guards on the quay. On deck and in the cargo hold. This contrasted with the security provided in Southampton for discharge. One policeman with a dog and if it was raining the dog would stay in the police van. The bullion was loaded onto an open truck and then onto the boat train.

Hi Bryan.
You would have made a fortune if only you had known Ronnie Brigs.

Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
I was thought at one time to be very close to him as one of the great train robbers by a supercillious little clerk in the consulate in Port of Spain Trinidad in 1967 Des. Who refused to pass me a passport until I did something I refused to do. I already have a post about it years ago so won’t harp on about it. But his excuse via Downing Street was he thought I was one of the great train robbers. Cheers JS
Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
Our dear Ronnie worked as a chippy on a motel about 20 klm down the road from us.
He managed to get into Oz when on the run and no one knew who he was.
Stayed a few years before moving on the South America.
Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
Well I was taken for one of his mob, maybe him so must have looked like a villain. Did get apologies from Downing Street , the clerk got a black eye for his trouble, I made sure my MP did her job for those living at the time in the NE it was Dame Irene Ward of Tynemouth she worked for her salary at that time. She must be a long time gone by now. JS
