Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
In late 1948 I was Asst. Cook on the Rowallan Castle . Whilst in Cape Town I saw some small wooden boxes being loaded into the paint locker in the forcastle, shortly afterwards a police officer asked me where the bullion was, I told him that I assumed that was what had been put in the paint locker. I later learned that a mail boat was having work done on it.
We had a police officer or two at each port up the coast and when we got to Suez there were machine guns and police etc. In Genoa we were surrounded by heavily armed guards. We sailed into a mirror like sea and in then hit one of the worse storms I've seen [ and I was in the Channel for the 1953 storm] we arrived in Southampton minus a lifeboat and loads of store. About half an hour later a PC rode up on his bicycle and stood by the gangway until a canvas covered lorry turned up. The boxes were loaded into the lorry , which looked as though it would be lucky to make it to the dock gate, and I understand it departed for London.
Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
Thank you, guys. I have that link, Doc, it's very informative, but in MY STORY the gold loads in Durban, and it's neither U-C, not the BofE. John, can I see your picture that looks like the B&W pic of the wagon in SA?
Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
Not to confuse the matter at hand at all
but can we clarify the murder was on the rotherick castle
not the roxburgh castle
so some other incident occurred during my 4 days on the roxburgh castle
possibly gold? Possibly another murder?
Will we ever find out??

Graham - the incident you speak of happened on the capetown castle
Re: Union Castle at Southampton 1963
Thanks for that Vernon, but to push some one out of a port hole they would have to be a bit on the slim side.
I have a port hole at home and somehow I cannot see how a full body would go through it.
Cut up yes, but no other way.
