Looking through some of these old posts maybe the East of Suez bonus which I never got and still to find someone who did , was maybe a bonus given by one of the better shipowners for getting his ship through in one piece ? JS

    Hi John.
I remember this big Welsh bosun and I pulling at a rope that was being pulled into a boat in Port Said in 1950.
As the saying goes one had to have eyes in your anus going through there. Must be disappointing for the boatmen these days with containers, as much as the crews.

Me neither John, and I was east of Suez for nearly two years on one ship!

On the subject of junk we bought in our innocent years, I still have two hardwood figures of two Inca Indians I bought in Callao in 1954. My Flying fish acquired in 1956 at Pitcairn Island carved by Fletcher Christian (must be Flet the fifth or sixth)
flew off a couple of years ago.

I acquired a large beaten copper plate of an INCA god, embellished with turquoise, in Callao. Cost me half a tube of toothpaste, half bottle of Vosene shampoo and I think $2.
    Still got it.

The squashed flies will now have passed their use by date. Give them to someone younger ? JS

We had a wet Saturday here last weekend, decided to clear out a cupboard, you know the one where you put stuff thinking maybe I will need that later.

Found at the back a pack of playing cards from maiden voyage of the British Hawthorn, a cigarette case from who knows where, silver plate so should have been sold in Las Palmas but kept it, and a photo album, no photos, that came from Cairo. Why do we keep this stuff??
    Happy daze John in Oz.
