That Shipping Company was first known as UNION STEAM COLLIER CO 1853.Then
In 1857 the Union Steam Ship Co
I think the Union,Briton, Dane,Norman,Saxon and Roman were these Ships??
Used primarary for carrying the Mial between England and South Africa.

transport coal from South Wales to Southampton

Castle Line
Castle Line had its origins with Donald Currie's purchase of a controlling interest in the Leith, Hull and Hamburg Steam Packet Company in 1862 after he resigned from Cunard Line. He registered his shipping business as Donald Currie & Co of Liverpool and set up for trade with India by ordering his fleet of four sailing ships, all with the suffix "Castle" in their names.
Castle Mail Packet Company
In 1876, Castle Mail Packet Co. Ltd was formed. Later that year, the Colonial Government awarded a joint mail contract, resulting in in a state of intense competition between both firms. The service to the Cape thus became weekly by alternating steamers.
Union Line and Castle Shipping Line merged 8 March 1900, creating the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company, Ltd, with Castle Shipping Line taking over the fleet.

That's an awful lot of Castle ships.! but how about casting the nets just a little bit wider now?....
James Chambers & Co (Liverpool) had four 'Castles. 'Three were purchased by Elder Dempster in 1943 ,and renamed in 1946. The fourth had been torpedoed in 1942.
Greystoke Castle
(blt 1928,renamed Freetown in 1946.Broken up Hamburg 1958.)
Thurland Castle
(blt.1929,renamed Fulani 1946.Broken up Odense 1958)
Penrith Castle
(blt 1929 renamed Fantee 1946.Wrecked on Seven Stones Reef 1949)
Muncaster Castle blt.1928. Torpedoed in 2-02N 12-02W 30/3/42 with loss of 24 lives.
There were others,especially early large 4-masted barques named after Lancashire & Cumbrian castles,e.g. Lowther Castle,Lancaster Castle,Wray Castle and Pendragon Castle.
By the way,re the Fantee( ex Penrith Castle,above),there 's a Wreck Report for anyone interested.

vernon was i right regarding the ss arapahoe becoming a cunard R.M.S. after a fire at lpool docks plz inform me? as for her five cargo:s. i am due a couple of hours peace@quite at my local library. if i have the right ship i will find her cargo? cheers mate terry;)
the windsor castle, was the last to be scrapped in 2005. i watched a t.v. programme very recently where they went aboard what is left of her with a t,v, crew.how sad to see what was a splendid ship like that which i myself done a xmas cruise aboard back in 1975, reduced to a heap of scrap she should have been put away in mothballs and maintained somewhere.its a great shame these ships arnt around for our younger generation to sail and enjoy, but i am sure you remember back in 1999,the U.C.L. was revived for a one of millenium cruise in december.p@o:s victoria was charted for a 60 day cruise around the cape she had her funnel repainted for the occasion. i think between me you @gulliver and johns input we have just about closed the book on this one, happy days indeed but sadely gone forever regards vern, i enjoyed that thread. regards all terry.Quote:

Do not wish that Vernon because if you had been rich then you would not have the memories that you now have besides that you are assured that all your friends want to know you because of who you are and not what you have. Something that those with money do not have I am sure. We have what a lot of them will never know and that is mates that want to do things for us just because they want to.
