Gout

#5 I suffer from gout and was prescribed the same medication as RQ, however, the side effects were such that I preferred the pain in my feet rather than the effects of the tiny colchicine tablets. They gave me severe and constant diar- dinar- sod it, the sh*ts. I now try to watch my diet, but there are so many culinary no-go areas that
I often consider a trade- off whereas ignore the restrictions for a while and enjoy life, then stoically suffer the consequences of my lapse."

Instead of Naproxen which gives me kidney failure, my Doctor has given me Zapain, a codeine phosphate paracetamol,
so far so good, only had them since Friday.

I also had gout John, in my big toe. My doctor also prescribed Naproxin and as you say it cleared up immediately. This was about 3 months ago and keeping my fingers crossed that it does not come back;

I too have suffered Gout for many Years,(Now free for about 6Years) learnt to eat foods that are not too high in Protein,keep off the Grog,and don't eat Tomatoes when you do start getting Gout it irritates it like heck!
When the start of it comes on best to take Indocid Tablets for the Pain ,then after that you must get on to the Allopurinol 300mg Tabs as said by Capt!
These nust be taken every day for life at times!
I have been very lucky and as said have been Gout free for some time now!
That pain in the Ankles and toes is sometimes unbearable!
At one stage I had to crawl on al fours to get anywhere! Ouch!!!
Cheers and no Beers! LOL Beer only aggrivates the condition,but does not bring it on!

Mention of beer and gout, when my condition was diagnosed I saw a dietician, and apart from most of the stuff to avoid she mentioned beer but that lager would be ok. I switched from Tetley's and John Smiths to Kronenbourg. Seemed to work, the attacks became less frequent, but then my food choices went a bit haywire so having to study diet sheets again.
I noticed Doc mentioned tomatoes can affect gout, didn't know that- I eat a lot of tomato based dishes. Suppose all I've got left is hard tack and weevils.

#9, Have to say Captain, I have been on Volteral or Diclofenic for several years. Allowed up to 150mg per day if need be but try and get by on 50mg. I don't have any side effects whatsoever although I do have the constitution of an ox, my blood only gets checked on average once a year. Only thing that disagrees with the medication is if I have ice cream!

I suffered with gout a few years back, now free, touch wood. As far as a diet to help gout, just look at everything you enjoy eating , and then cut it out !!, at least thats how it seems to me, KT

Thankfully it is something I have never suffered and from what you all say I have no wish to ever have it. Uric acid is the cause and that can be at a high level without alcohol, many foods will increase it. Foods high in some fats will also make it worse.

Plenty of green veg will absorb some of the acid, and increasing your fresh water intake will also help, it flushes the system. I drink at least 3 liters day.

Of course in dsparation you could have the big toe removed!!!

One more very important thing to watch if you are prone to Gout attacks is your Kidneys!

If you constantly are getting Gout then it is very possible that your Kidneys are not functuning as they should. (Not getting rid of enough Uric Acid through urination! Thus the surplus collects and forms Crystals in the various joints!
Therefore a Doctors Visit and a Kidney Check is well advised!
Take Heed! All you Gout sufferers!

A simple blood test will let you know if you are going into kidney failure. it can be fatal untreated.
