Seamans Charities.

An old shipmate of mine, Alan Chapman, recently died and his widow Eve asked for donations to a Seamans charity instead of flowers. She has some money collected and has asked me where she should send it. I am sure there are some deserving charities out there but which are the most deserving, any ideas chaps.?

I sailed with Alan when he did his first trip on the "Manchester City" as deck boy in 1958, he did several trips there and went on to do trips on: Changinola, Ripley (3 trips), Pacific Fortune, Pacific Envoy (2 trips), Palmelian (6 trips), La Pampa, La Chacra (3 trips) 1971, and then came ashore and went rigging.

In between those trips we sailed together on a deep sea yacht around the Med. in 1967. Alan was a good shipmate and will be sorely missed. He was from Manchester by the way.

Personally I believe that the most deserving charity connected to the sea is the RNLI. As volunteers many of those lads and lasses are true heroes in their own right and deserve all the help they can get.

hi alec. whilst i agree that the RNLI does a great job, i think eve is probably thinking about charity for merchant seamen in dire need. there are many charities out there so i think she should look for one for seamen. alf

Alec,
There are a couple of worthy ones which run sheltered homes for ex seamen & widowsm One is the Springbok Estate in Surrey,
Another one is the Royal Alfred Seafarers Society whose patron is Princess Anne and website is www.royalalfredsseafarers .com, telephone o1737 353763.
I also would suggest the Missions to Seamen and RNLI as very acceptable as we all must have used the former. My condolences to your friends wife & family.

I'm not trying to sway anyone who donates to any of the Merchant Navy charities. But the one you bring to mind i think ex seaman and there familys should look into the fantastic work that they do couldn't agree more Regards Terry.
